That’s my exact thoughts on my active . There was a used passive shorty T. C. Listed on Guitar Center used last week.That's a beauty! Too bad it's not a short scale. Good thing I found a used mint condition T.C. passive shorty. That'll help mitigate the GAS attack.

Happy to get #4 of this bass! NBD! I played a stingray for a decade in my 20s, sold it and always wanted to scratch that itch with something newer. When they released the specials I was intrigued but wasn’t looking for another bass with more batteries ugh. It’s just odd that Musicman put the wrong pickup in the bass and Sweetwater never noticed either. I knew it had the wrong pickup from the moment they sent me the pictures as they do. I opened the box knowing it was wrong. The Commerford pickup has shaved mouthing tabs, not a big deal but the bass wasn’t right. Sweetwater and Musicman took care of it, sort of. I had the option to ship the whole bass back which I did not want to do. Musicman offered instead to send the replacement pickup once they received mine. They do not pay for shipping however, which is really lame. I got to pay for a mistake Musicman made, but I guess they gave the option to ship it back to SW. I’m not sure, but I think that since I replaced the pickup myself the factory warranty is gone? Who knows, but SW said it likely will not be covered anymore. So after a month of having a bass with no pickup in it, I finally have a working bass. I put a shim in it to get the action a bit lower and Sweetwater did an excellent job on the Plek service. Some pickup foam under the ramp helped the feel, because it was a bit easy to push down while playing. These new specials pickups are very different than the previous generation I’ll say. Lots of wires and glue and grounding circuit boards stuff going on under there. I hope I never have to take it out again. Put some flats on it, and wow! This thing sounds amazing. So unique and warm. The rest of the bass is quality in spades. Man this finish they’ve done, matte blue, it is insanely good. The best finish I’ve ever had on a bass by far. The neck is just as good.
I have seen maybe 5 or so other basses same model with the wrong pickups too, so I wonder what was going on at Musicman?

How are you certain the other examples also have the wrong pickup?

Look at the screw tabs in his second photo (IMG_750). They are full size. The tabs on the correct pickup are beveled about 45°, making it more comfortable to rest your thumb there. My T.C. has the correct pup thankfully.
Do you actually mean the pickup cover, rather than the pickup itself?
As far as I know, other than the 70's Retro (which uses the original design AlNiCo 5 pickup), and the Sterling / Joe Dart (which use a Ceramic pickup), all modern StingRays use the same Neodymium pickup.
As far as I can tell, all modern StingRays / Sterlings / Joe Dart pickup covers are of the classic / vintage design, with the screw hole tabs flush with the top of the cover.
Only the Tim Commerford instrument have the later 2000's style pickup covers, with the low profile, contoured screw tabs.I
Sorry yours got shipped with the wrong cover.
If anyone else runs into this problem, get advice from EBMM Customer Service, to see if the pick-up will easily pop out of the cover without damaging it, and if so, they can send / sell you the correct cover.
That would be an easy swap, that doesn't require any soldering, won't void the warranty, and won't put your instrument out of action for any period of time.
lol and the single coil / series selectors are not working. It’s like the pickup is grounding out on the front coil somewhere or it’s a dead coil? You’d think replacing a pickup wire for wire with the same identical pickup wouldn’t screw up, but it did. Idk. Now it’s at a pro shop, they couldn’t see any wrong wiring off the bat. I’m so annoyed with this bass.
