New Fender Mustang

I have nothing against a well made bass from any country, but I'm also aware of Fender's pricing structure.

So am I. A MIM bass doesn't normally cost this much so I have to figure there's something about it that would make them think they can charge this much for it. I'll reserve my judgement until I've played one.

The higher end Mexico basses are sweet, I'll end up with a CIJ or a pawn shop mustang someday. I wish they kept the pawn shop in production longer than they did, they kept them around just long enough for the price of them used to not take a dip far past what you would pay for a new one on sale. Looks like everybody is moving towards having higher tier mid-level basses. Look at Sterling by musicman with the roasted neck HH stingrays, which are very very nice.

That's the MSRP. I'm sure it will be available for a considerably better price. And as to the fingerboard, Pao Ferro is a great wood in its own right. I had a '90s 5-string Fender Jazz with a Pao Ferro board - looked and sounded great!

that's the same price that GC and Zzounds are using for pre-orders.

Not got my hands on one, but I believe this is a sweet bass. The differences to the JMJ Road Worn Mustang are imho not world moving. Yes, sure, the finish of the body and neck is different, the neck shape itself is different, and it comes with a Pau Ferro instead a rosewood fretboard. But at least in my country the Vintera is EUR 200 (US $ 220) cheaper as the JMJ. However, I am very curious to hear that thing. If the pickup in the Vintera comes close to the Custom Seymour Duncan in the JMJ, I would be very interested to buy one in Sea Foam Green.

Just my opinion, but I think that Fender thinks Mustangs are extremely trendy right now,
so they figure 'strike while the iron is hot, we'll start high and see who bites'.

There's the JMJ Mustang, the P/J Mustang, the American Performer Mustang, the Vintera Mustang, and the recently announced Classic Vibe '60s Mustang.
Several stores have exclusive variations on these models too.

I have two MIM P/J Mustangs, and both of them have had bad switches.
Other than that, they're made fairly well, but IMO, the pickups are nothing to write home about. I swapped them out in one of them.
That's my only experience with MIM basses though.

They've been hot with indie rock bands for almost ten years though, maybe more. I'm not sure we can call it a trend when it lasts ten years. And there tons of used ones out there.

I'm going through an anti-Fender phase right now. They came out with a line of guitar amps that were supposed to be an homage to the Marshall sound a couple of years ago, and that's when I decided that company has just completely lost its path, jumped the shark, etc.

You're probably right.

But I'm pretty sure the Am. Perf. Mustang and the Vintera were announced this year, the JMJ Nov. 2017,
the P/J summer of 2016 and the Classic Vibe Mustang July 18, 2019.

Five Mustangs within the last 3 years. And 3 announced in this year alone.
