There are other differences between the new Vintera and the JMJ besides just the relicing on the finish. Nut width, neck profile, and fingerboard radius are all different.
Right - I'm assuming different tuners, and pickups too (I haven't had a chance to look at the product page yet).
But for those of us who don't consider the current P/J offering to really be a true Mustang ; this is the best alternative to a JMJ, or buying vintage.
That's the MSRP. I'm sure it will be available for a considerably better price.....
I’ve been GASing for one of these in white. Would be totally useless for my band (metal with a lot of low b work) but I used to have a 7 string I liked playing on the couch at home and miss that upper register of the 7 specifically for times when I’m playing by myself so I’m thinking a white pj mustang with piccolo strings. The new MIM Mustang P/J is the REAL winner, and especially if you get it for $399 delivered from Adorama on one of their sales. Besides the great fit, finish and sound, the best part of the P/J is that it uses standard short-scale strings, not the specialized medium scale through-body ones required for the other Mustangs.

I'd hesitate to pay $949 for a MIA Mustang. No way I'd pay that for a MIM.
I was excited when I first saw it, but thank the gods that the combination of price and country of origin
squashed the GAS pretty quickly, because I definitely don't need another bass.
You're aware that Mexico has been making guitars for much longer than the US? They make classical guitars that cost tens of thousands of dollars and there's a town down there where just about every resident makes guitars for a living. The only limit to the quality of a MIM Fender is the degree to which Fender USA chooses to cut corners in order to protect its Made in USA sales.
