New Fender Rumble Combo amps - NAMM 2014

No, DO NOT PUT LESS THAN 8 OHM cab on as an extension!! The internal speakers are an 8 ohm load. An extension cab will be in parallel with the internal load i.e. an 8 ohm extension cab + 8 ohm internal load is 4 ohms. If you put an extension cab on that's LESS than 8 ohms, the total load to the amp will be less than 4 ohms. That will mean higher current and a greater likelihood you'll burn out something.
 
Yep! Just pop the Rumble 500 Combo on top of the new Rumble 410 cab and have a full 500 watts into 610's!

You'll have mismatched speakers if you do that. If the combo has 2 tens at 8 ohms, and the new Rumble 410 (at 8ohms) is added as an extension cab, you'll be sending 250W into each i.e 250W into the top 2 tens, and 250W into the bottom 4 tens. :rollno:

HaHaHa! Dude they are designed for each other! But by all means email the Fender engineers and tell them how much more you know than they. I'm sure they'll be mightily impressed! :rolleyes:

Your assumption is incorrect. Have you been in direct contact with the Fender engineers or are you blowing smoke out your ears? :D

The 410 cab was surely made to be mated to one of their new heads, not as an extension cab. I don't know what your background is, mine is electrical engineering. Pushing 2 tens w/ 250W and 4 tens with 250W is just plan lop sided from a power stand point. But by all means, you go right ahead

Yes, you can do it. But you'll be driving 2x10" with 250 watts and 4x10" with only 250 watts. The power is divided based upon the impedance. In this case 2 8ohm loads (the internal 2x10" and the external 4x10") in parallel will each get half the power output of the amp. From a power stand point it doesn't make sense to drive 1/3 of your air with 1/2 your power and 2/3 of your air with 1/2 your power. Adding an extension cab to a combo is not the same as using a stereo biamp.

The new Rumble 410 is rated at 500W continuous / 1000W peak. While I haven't direct input from Fender either, it doesn't make a lot of sense IMO to add a 500W cab where it'll get only 250W. At 500W total output, each of the internal speakers will get 125W and each of the speakers in the 410 cab will get 62.5W. Think of the speakers as pistons in a car. In a 6 cylinder engine, would you give 1/2 the gas to 4 of the 6 cylinders and expect smooth performance AND longevity?

A better extension cab IMO is the new Rumble 15" cab. A 15" speaker has close to the same surface area as 2x10", and is rated at 300W continuous (i.e. comfortable head room from a 250W source). I don't have the specific frequency response data for it, but usually a 1x15" cab is voiced more for the lower end, which would be accentuated by placement on the ground, while the internal 2x10" will project more mids. It's a more balanced pairing.

My Ampeg PF-350 just died yesterday after second time I used it. Actually I feel lucky, otherwise I would have missed these new Fenders. It's time to switch the brand. Can't wait to have one of those Rumble 500 heads. I really like the new/vintage look.

Yup, you're right. Clayton is mixing driver sizes - with an engineer there to keep things BALANCED!! I wish I had a company feeding me all the amps I want and a tech working them behind stage and checking all the gear before and after every show. Nice arrangement if it's available to you.

Did you notice that Clayton uses 2 amp heads to drive his mix of 10"s and 15"s? From the link above... " U2’s Adam Clayton using two DB 750's (amp heads, ed), two DB 410's, and two DB 115's"

Billy Sheehan does the same thing: 1 amp powers his 10" drivers and another (different) amp drives his 15" drivers. Do you know just how Clayton's amps are wired?

Yeah, do the math. Two 8 ohm loads in parallel = 4 ohms. This amp will push half its power into the internal two 10", and half its power into four 10" if you add the 410 cab. You can't control that. At any given power output from the amp, each of the internal speakers will be working twice as hard as each of the speakers in the 410 cab. If that makes sense to you, go ahead and do it. From an electrical engineer's point of view, this is questionable. Mixing disparate cabs is better handled with a stereo / biamp head, or 2 amp heads as Sheehan and Clayton. But if you have Adam Clayton's kind of money behind you, you'll be able to replace drivers / cabs / amps whenever you want.

take a look at the ampeg 610hlf.
its basically a 210 and a 410 in 1 box so by your math that ported 210 on the bottom (if running this head) would get 1/2 the amps juice?
i think not.

that amp is gonna see a 4 ohm load not 2 separate boxes.
now if the amp was stereo or split then yes, each box would get 250.

But it is feeding two seperate 'sends' of 250w to each cabinet (the internal 2x10 and the external 4x10) internal jack to internal cab..ext jack to ext cab..power amp splits the signal equally - 250 to each

No amp can sense that one cab has twice the number of drivers of the other cab and adjust the load (at least without a user controlled balance knob). So while you could use the 4x10 cab with the 2x10 combo..you would be sending twice the load to each of the internal speakers compared to each driver in the ext cab.

Is it a 'bad' idea..no more than it is 'ideal'......just maybe not the most efficient use of the combo or ext cab. Seems like (imho) a 'same driver equipped' 2x10 ext cab is the best match. But Fender (being a big name that sells most of their gear to folks less 'versed' in speaker performance than a bunch of gearheads on an online forum) likely felt a 15" ext cab was an easier sell due to the out dated/inaccurate notion that 15s are for lows and 10s are for highs..a notion that many a pro-level stage rig reinforces as one cant see the cross-overs/balanced send/multiple amps being used as easily as one sees the 10s stacked on top of the 15s

Bottom line is that while it would work...(and likely work fine all things considered) it might not be the best choice.
