Hello,
Here is another guitarist looking at the bass. I'm still new, Been taking weekly lessons for about two years. Started thinking about the bass last week. I've been reading this forum for the last couple of day's and quickly got overwhelmed on how many decisions on choosing a rig. I figure on spending about $300 on a bass and amp. I've been looking at a SX SPJ 3TS bass and a Acoustic B20 amp. Anything wrong in that choice for starting out?

The SX should do you fine but I would take the rest of the money and get a used combo with more power. See if you can get something around 100 watts. Keep an eye on Craigslist for a used Peavey combo. Everytime you see something, do a search on this forum and Harmony Central for revues.

Welcome! Ya can't go wrong with the SX, for the money. Be prepared to make some minor adjustments to it and you'll probably want some new strings as well.

Personally, I do not care much for the new 'born again' line of Acoustic amps, especially the low wattage ones. Others have no problem and love them, so take my opinion for what its worth (2 cents). I would be on the lookout for a used amp on ebay or craigslist, if it were me. Preferably a Peavey.

SX is amazing, even for players whom are extremely experienced. Check it out @ rondomusic.com.

As for amps, a small 50-watt Kustom combo, an SX combo (comes free with some SX guitars) or a Peavey will do a learner good.

I have the 10w Acoustic combo and it was an amazing deal for $100 IMO.

SWR LA Series is a good amp 100 watts/15inch speaker and can pick up used pretty cheap. I use if for acoustic gigs and rehearsal. G

Thanks! from the response I think I made an ok bass choice but the amp is weak. I know for my guitar 20W would be ok. For a half way decend amp I need to go about 50~100W?

Definitely. There's no real equation to it, but most bass players who have to compete with with a 100watt guitar amp typically use at least 400 watts.

Anything around 100 watts or up would be good for starting out, definitely.
