New fridge day!

Well after lurking CL for a while i came across this neglected Ampeg 810 Classic for 420 bucks. Its missing alot of tolex and the grill is held on with screws, but damn now i sure know why people love them so much! Its sounds fantastic with my P bass and Gk head. I was told that its around 10 years old. It only has one input and no tweeter, what time frame is that from? All the ones i've seen have separate inputs for the 410s and a tweeter.

I have the grill off, thats why its crooked in the picture. Also, i found that 3 of the bottom speakers have dents in the center little "domes" of the cones. Is that detrimental to the speakers? It sounds fine to me.

Nice!!!

I ran a GK 800 head into a Ampeg SVT 810 cabinet for 26+ years...NEVER had a problem with being heard! Loved it!!!
I still have and use the head, wish I had hung onto the cab.

Sounds like the previous owner had the grill off at rehearsal and someone's child poked their fingers into the dust caps on your speakers.
If the dents aren't to serious you can loop a piece of tape around your finger, sticky side out, gently press it in the dent and gently pull straight out.
I did this once with some JBL's with the silver dust caps, took the dent out.

Very nice! I'm contemplating buying a 70s fridge that has 2 blown speakers and probably some other issues. My friend doesn't play and is trying to get rid of it for a ridiculous price. Too bad it can't fit inside a civic.

Well for most of its life it was owned buy a sound rental company, so that explains why its so beat. The grill is actually pretty warped, that explains why its held on with screws and not velcro ;) But for 420 dollars i dont care about cosmetics, that can all be fixed eventually! I dont see why so many people consider these overkill, having eight speakers spanning the height of your whole body sounds great, even if you arent cranking it up.

Anyone know why this model has no tweeter and only one input?

Congrats on the new fridge. I think I read somewhere that a vacuum cleaner can lift those dents out.

I've come to appreciate that my ampeg 810e cabinet is so significant to sonic performance/quality that it makes my "inferior" backup ampeg head (the 350watt B2) sound damn great. My main amp is the SVT2 Pro.

I am a 27 year bass veteran but only a recent fridge convert. It is amazing to hear all that air moving at once isn't it? FOr most of my career I have been a 210 guy. But I am sold. I have a son who plays now so I will make him move it for me when I am too old and feeble to do so on my own.

that is an early 810e made by st louis music in the early 90's. if the serial number's still on it, you can date it by going to Dating Ampeg Amplifiers .

the reason it doesn't have a tweeter is because that's how the 810e rolls. none of them have tweeters. the reason it only has one input is twofold...the earlier 810's took 400w as opposed to the 800w they take now, and also back then, nobody cared about splitting two sides of an amp in between two halves of an 810. ampeg didn't even have an amp with two separate power amps back then. that's a relatively recent thing.

however, out of all the 810e's that slm produced, by far, my favorite sounding is those early 810e's with the single 1/4" input.

Thanks for the info Jimmy, don't know why i thought they had tweeters. It sounds awesome, i get the "Ampeg" thing now. Not to mention it's built super solid. I dont mind lifting heavy things, so i imagine i shall be carting this thing around to most of my gigs, regardless of whether its necessary. It sounds great and looks killer!
