Double Bass New Gamut Red Diamond Gut Strings

labravajazz - How high is your action with the Reds? I have mine at about 7mm - 11.5mm and am considering raising the bridge to see if my sound gets any bigger
Yes mine are about that height too maybe a bit higher on the G, I raised them a bit from how they were with Genssler G string I had on here the last year or so.
I found the gauge just a bit heavier than the Carlos Chorda which I had previously used for some years on this bass - actually amazing how much life you can if you look after good quality gut....
Just mentioning so you see what I am comparing to.

Not too high the G is Half an inch off the board and the E string about the same. To be fair the bridge is curved but the g string is very fat
Its true, these strings are fat compared to steel cores or plain gut. Do you have bridge adjusters? 1/2 inch is about 12 mm, that's much higher than I'd want to set my action. Are your slots wide enough for the new strings?

The E & A being metal wound take longer then the D & G but like any gut you have to keep tightening them a few times whenever you pick up the bass.
Not only for the tuning but because the strings sound much better after they stretched out and seem to solidify the tone.
I've played a few gigs now with the Red Diamonds and they are pretty stable more so the nylon wound than the metal which haven't quite settled yet.
The metal wound gut will always be unstable when the weather changes drastically, being made of 2 very different materials, but once you are on the stand and playing in same conditions I find them reliable.

I just tried a set of these strings on a bass at a shop. I am a gut player and I loved them. The D and G string did not feel particularly High in tension to me compared to the strings on my own basses. On this particular bass however they did feel slightly stiffer than the lower strings. But still not what I would consider stiff at all. Just normal for gut. If anything, I thought the low strings felt kind of loose but I liked it. I think setup and Bridge curvature is going to affect these strings so it will vary from Bass to Bass to a degree. But I liked them so much I played the bass that had them on more than the bass that I went there intending to try to perhaps purchase
