Double Bass New Gamut Red Diamond Gut Strings

i grabbed a D/G off of a talkbasser here. they're fine strings. thumpy and less sustain than my evahs. ive got spiro weich on bottom and the guts feel higher tension than the spiros. These are thick strings. Thicker than my artones they replaced. I may want to get some innovations for the bottom strings but this is my backup bass. I don't use it a ton.

Yes, the high tension was why I sold my set, it just felt weird for guts...the G/D are also rounded in a way that made my fingers feel uncomfortable.

I may grab a Lyon G and Pistoy D (maybe heavy G with medium+ D this time?), stash 'em till late spring, and keep an eye out for Gamut's summer sale to complete the set. I figure having plain gut laying around is less a risk than wrapped gut. Also figure I can squeeze another couple months out of the full set of Gamuts on my dear Kay (all heavy gauge with Lyon G and Pistoy D) that have been on for about 3 years now (thank goodness for string rewinds).

Just a heads up and initial impressions FWIW, as I put a set of Red Diamonds on my small 3/4 Q Bass and after a couple of days stretching up to Pitch a few times, I took it out on a jazz gig today, 3 horns plus rhythm section.
Results surprised me, after reading mixed comments here. On installation they strike me as very Sturdy construction for gut strings. They seem like updated Golden Spirals to a degree - I don't find the tension all that heavy quite medium in fact. The red D and G do have a nylon winding but it feels good to me, a bit edgy in a good way really, there is some squeak when pizzicato but sounds natural a bit like a brand new set of classical guitar strings. Adds to definition and tension feels matched. The overall acoustic tone is fat and broad, typical good strong gut string tone so much fatter tone than any metal or synthetic but with highs as well as deep lows and heaps of front to the note in jazz pizz mode.
Quite bowable (with care) similar to plain gut.
On the gig it was a full fat tone with very much acoustic vibe even through amp. Easy to play and even response.
In short these are keepers based on this brief experience. I need to do a few days practice to be sure but on first time gig use I am impressed!
A great alternative gut set at a reasonable price and quality design and construction- comparable to Chorda and other Gamut etc not as delicate or nuanced perhaps, but strong and thumpy with big tone for jazz and blues.
