New Gibson ES-335 bass (not Midtown!): wow!!! Any better details???

drbassman,
THANKS for posting that EB-650.
You may have noticed my VB-650 clone floating around?

Only recently became aware of these from projectguitar.

Only 42 of them were ever made??? You are lucky,(or blessed) to have found one.

I went with a 32" scale for kicks. Haven't had a shorter scale bass since my first 2 "beatle" basses in the early 70's.

Played one last weekend at the Chicago Music Exchange. It was nice and very well finished as a custom shop bass should be.

The neck was a little larger than my '66 EB 2D and the claims from the nay sayerS about accessibilty of the top frets above 15th were unfortunately true.

I left the store happy to stay with my EB2.

I haven't seen your VB-650. Got a link to it? As you asked,
here are some shot of the 650. This thing hung on the wall of the local shop for years, never sold or got much attention, and I finally asked to play it. I loved it and bought it cheap. Now it's mine forever!

While I agree that this bass may not be an identical representation of the '64, it was designed to be "old meets new". I do get a little neck dive but I get the same from my Epi Jack Casady and that bass is revered by most.

That being said, the shape of the body and neck should really come second to the beautiful, organic and versatile tones you can pull from this lady.

It's big, it's sexy, it's classic. 9.0 out of 10. Only deltas are that I would have liked to have seen a bigger headstock like on the Ripper and maybe a pick guard.

Rather than have ONE of these: ES335 ($1995.00 Street Price- Musician's Friend in Ebony), I think I'd rather have one of EACH: Fender Starcaster ($749.95 Street) and Fender Coronado ($749.95 Street). Why not have the best of ALL worlds (especially those of you wanting 30" scale)?

^ that is exactly my plan: could not resist and ordered one month ago my Aged Burst Coronado (still waiting for the delivery!) then my plan is to catch possibly second hand a Starcaster. I admit that the 335 is really gorgeous but the cost and the impossible acces beyond 16 fret are blocking points for me. I wonder why in the world they did not make the deeper cutout like the Casady... ??? Function determines the form... most times!
