I was just on facebook and saw a post about a new GK amp made specifically for upright bass. Looks to be based on the MB800 and targeted at guys who use a bridge and fingerboard pickup. Stereo input with separate volume/tone control for the fingerboard pickup. Have you guys heard anything about this?

I was just on facebook and saw a post about a new GK amp made specifically for upright bass. Looks to be based on the MB800 and targeted at guys who use a bridge and fingerboard pickup. Stereo input with separate volume/tone control for the fingerboard pickup. Have you guys heard anything about this?

Perhaps they have something new in the works. The EQ voicing of the current MB 800 wouldn't be among my choices for Double Bass. The MB 200 works well, but it's not very powerful.
I have the MB500 & the MB200 and can get a good sound on both amps playing UB, EUB & BG.
I have a variety of spk cabs, inc. GK12", & Markbass 2-10" & 15".
Got to learn how to dial in your sound.
Obviously all Basses, settings & venues will vary.
Wish I also bought the MB800, but I also bought an AI Coda, & had to $top!

I sold my MB800 last week to an upright player. He absolutely loves it!
Many upright players use and love them
I'm using the GK MB500 for Upright now. It's very natural. I prefer it to all the boutique amps I've tried or owned. Sounds killer with an Ampeg 210AV. i have a felix preamp and I prefer it straight into the GK.
As a long-time GK user, I was very interested in the new MB series amps when they came out. Having now owned a few of them and used several others, I was really disappointed in the way they sound. Unless the new MB800UB is voiced very differently than the other MB heads, I wouldn't even consider it. Since sound is extremely subjective, your experience may be very different.

I agree wholehartedly, IMHO there is big tonal difference between the original 200MB or MBS and the rest of the line, with the posible exception of the MB200, which I've only played through at GG. There's a 200MB in the TB DB classifieds. I can't find any pictures or posts of this new amp.

So... yeah. I've been in touch with the folks at GK.
This amp does not exist and is not in the current GK plans. It was a mock-up done some time ago by another Talkbass member, apparently, and has no basis in reality.
But if you had dream features for such an amp, what would it have? He wants to know.

I really want a regular MB800, the only feature that I see that might be missing is a second independent eq'd channel. Also it's at least $200 too expensive.

Actually - It wouldn't be too hard for them they're 90% of the way there with their current line-up.
- Flat as possible freq. response
- Variable HPF
- High (or switchable) input impedance.
- Mic input
I use an MB200 (and previously an MB500) with great success for upright through a Fearless F112--but use an HPF2 and SansAmp ParaDI in front. I can't see an advantage to the proposed "upright" MB800 unless there's separate EQ available for the two pickups. When I'm playing loud gigs with both my Full Circle and Biesele EM pickups, I use an old Raven Labs PMB so that I can separately phase and EQ the two pickups. The 1 Mohm input impedance for the GKs is OK for piezo pickups but not nearly as good as the 10 Mohm in the Raven Labs or HPF preamps.

Ah, if only. I was hoping that suggestions would be realistic. [he said, tongue firmly in cheek]
The only thing that is unrealistic is the incessant attitude in this country that everyone has to get down on their knees and bend over and let Chinese manufacturing and interests defy all common sense! All of my equipment is US made. Sure, having a percentage of the components or some of your things made in China is fine and part of the the way it works now, but to just accept that everything is should only be an option if you live in Bejing. Every time you buy a product that is, you just make the whole thing worse...I'll say it 1000 times and never back down.

You and I are both examples of people who produce things ourselves, and actually earn a living in a western country by making things without outsourcing to China. Yes, it's possible. Very few western humans understand how to use even a hammer, so they can't comprehend how a man-made physical object could be created except by magic in the far east. We westerners earn our money by providing financial services (and also lots of weapons) to the unwashed poorer countries, helping them. As far as the GK amp, I don't care where it's made. They all suck. They all sound terrible to my ear for either upright or slab. All the ones I've heard or tried anyway and I've owned a few. Sorry.
