As a guitar player turned bassist recently. I'm sure with enough effort you'll be able to play that song in a month or 3. I would suggest a decent bass in the $500 range. G&L tribute series, or Yamaha BB series. Or a used Sterling Ray 34. I prefer these over the cheap entry level $200 basses because they don't need any mods, and are gig and recording studio ready. Don't get me wrong, the Cheap entry basses are good for what they do. But in the long run, you may want to up grade, and once you upgrade, chances are the cheap bass will not get much play time and resale value is horrible.
If you have a decent guitar amp, you can use it for the bass amp as long as you don't crank up the amp. It should hold you over until you save up for a decent amp.
