New guy, New bass...

Hello all,

I picked up this new bass. It's a 2003 Squire Standard Precision Bass. Previous owner was thinning his collection, but just had this bass professionally set up and restrung. Even including receipts. Here are a few pictures. I feel pretty good about this bass.

I have to say, I like to modify stuff. Not because it isn't good enough, just part of nature. I see that this scratch guard has 13 holes. Will a Fender 13 hole scratch guard fit this bass? I've read about the Squire pots being a weak point on these. Worth upgrading to Fender or other pots? I could easily tackle routing the cavity deeper, if need be. What else would be a worth while upgrade on this Squire? Tuners? For the most part, I've read that the bodies and necks on these are pretty good. That makes it pretty easy to improve any other short comings.

Fender brand replacement guard should be just fine, I love tort on black and I especially love that they finished painting it (headstock). Great looking bass.
If you are interested in a non-traditional color guard look at D'Andrea, they make some OEM so you know the screw holes align properly.
Modding is your call. Everyone has favorites. If the pots are not working well you can replace them easily. And CTS and others are pretty low cost. Personally I'd only replace the pots if the tone/treble wasn't working for me or if I wanted to change the volume/volume/tone to volume/blend/tone.

Welcome to TalkBass!!!! Not only is that a great looking bass, but it's ten times better than the first one I owned.

And, yes, I would upgrade the wiring harness, IF you think the tone is lacking anywhere. But Fender doesn't make their own pots and/or caps. Just get aftermarket ones. No need to pay a premium to buy them from the big F.

Nice PJ, very popular bass lately.
I'd play it for a while and see if anything acts up.
Usual weak point is input jack then the pots. These are all easy
& cheap fixes.

Thanks guys! I'm definitely excited. I'll try to just play it for a while, and see how everything feels, as I start to improve. I will most certainly be the weak point in the rig, for a good long while!

Perfect example of one of the better Squiers.
As for mods, why would you change the pickguard? A black one wouldn't make it special, neither would a white one. Black pearl or white pearl? Again, no.
That pickguard is what makes it look special...and I'm not even a tort fan.
Now, you should change strings.
GHS black tapewounds will make it sound even better than it looks.
