New guy wanting a new bass...need advice

Epiphone Thunderbird Classic Pro or Classic. They are both $499 and both should be worth more. They are both neck-thru but have some differences. The Classic is an has epi pickups and an active 2-band eq preamp. The Classic Pro has the standard Thunderbird layout (volume, volume, tone) but it has gibson USA t-bird pickups. I love my Gibson but was a close second.
sounds like it could be a bad cable .. ? maybe it's a Speaker cable instead of an instrument cable .. ?? we've all mixed up cables time and again .. ! or maybe another grounding issue somewhere ... ??
I wouldn't be shy of either product ... as with anything = crap happens
if you like the basic P-bass sound , but want more tones ... I agree with trying something with a P/J type setup ... the type of pickup and placement gives the P-bass a very unique tone ... most J-basses won't get that 1 exact tone ... close , yes ... but they'll get many others .. !! take your time trying things out at the store ... don't let the Sales weinies rush you into anything .. !!

I really like my Fender Aerodyne Jazz (MIJ with P / J pups). I got it back in 2007 or so and its still my go-to 4 string. Don't be too shy on Fenders. They can be hit or miss, though.
Out of the basses you are currently considering I would go with the G&L L2000 tribute. It is probably the most versatile bass ever, you can get pretty much any sound out of it.
First: Play as many different basses as you can in any price range.
Find the "ergonomic" and "sonic" qualities that you prefer most.
Then consider used, let some one else eat the depreciation. You'll get more bass for your money and widen your number of choices.
Set your budget and start your ABC's...Comparison of the basses that fall within your price range.
You'll save time and frustration...Because if you really love bass, a bad case of GAS is just around the corner!

BTW is there anywhere good in the Salt lake area to look at basses? I'm only about 30 miles North of Salt Lake.
Guitar Center in west valley, as long as you aren't looking for 5/6 strings. They do have a 7 string BTB though. There's a place called Guitar Czar on about 3900th south, although it's been a while since i've stopped by, I can't remember what kind of bass gear they carried.
