jimmy, welcome to TalkBass. This is a great forum, with lots of info, and plenty of experience to draw from. Sometimes the folks get a little rowdy, but usually not. My main basses are Music Mans, but right now I have two Epiphones, with no apologies. I find them to be of very good quality and sound, and I like mine very much.

Anyways, welcome, and how about some shots of the old Merc?

I've been playing since 1998 and my favorite basses are from Rondomusic. I now gig pretty much every weekend. Most basses out there will get the job done just fine. But then, I shape my tone mainly with the amp...

For REAL. This is where the GAS lives. I lurked on TB for years, leaching info. I finally joined to take advantage of ONE classified sale....I don't want to explain the re$t. :)
BUT, with so much knowledge and great gear, this place will help you find YOUR setup to achieve YOUR sound... I love the classified because people sell some REALLY great gear, but you can find ALL of the facts and opinions you want (and some you don't) to help you search on the best path.

Jimmy, you forgot to mention one thing...what kind of car did you restore?
Is it a Mercury?
And is it a '50's Merc?
