Guitar player here but wanted to pick up bass again (played for about a year in high school many moons ago). Had some questions so thought this would be the best place to get some answers!

So... back into it, dove head in and picked this up:

After months of searching, I really think I got a good deal on this. Brand new, everywhere i've seen, the cheapest you can get one is $1799. Some places selling them for up to $2500. Even used on eBay or Reverb they're above this price point. I got this one brand new for $1399 out the door (tax included and shipping). Really happy with that. Super easy to flip if i ever felt the need and could probably even make a couple hundred.



Now, bass heads, i ask you:

School me on some bass pedals! Looking to play all sorts of styles but the band i'm starting now is similar to Russian Circles (post metal)

(Just picked up a Tech 21 SansAmp 3-Channel Programmable Bass Driver DI for 17% off too! Going to use this to record direct into the Apollo Duo)

As for pedals, I'm not much into effects. If you want schooling, my advice would be "use some taste". Bass doesn't work well with extreme effects in my opinion. And that is why my favorite overdrive pedal is a Bad Monkey modded for bass. It's actually not half bad on bass unmodded, as it is a nice tame overdrive that lets a good portion of clean channel through. Modded for bass it's killer. Unfortunately I've lost the link to the guy who mods and sells them (good price too) and the mods (you change a couple caps) are online too. These days it's about the only pedal I use save volume, tuner and DI. Sometimes an EQ pedal is said to have some uses but I don't go that way.

For all the other bass effects, I've got an old legacy Digitech BP-8 that these days is just on the edge of passable. You can set it to do all manner of things. The octaver sounds nice but has a lot of problems with the notes on an ERB once you get out of the 4 string range. I'll have to get something more modern one of these days. Amp modeling is useful too. Get that Ampeg sound without the refrigerator! I'm sure the effects forum here can fill you in on all the latest stuff and details.

Congratulations on a great deal on a gorgeous Ric!

I don't know Russian Circles, just sampling a bit on Youtube now, but I'd definitely agree that you should go over to the effects forum for more details. PG has done a rig rundown on them, though... http://www.talkbass.com/threads/new-here-and-nbd.1119370/ . That may give you some ideas.

Congratulations on the nice Ric purchase, and on picking up bass again in general. Best wishes on your journey.

As far as your effects question, for Russian Circles-inspired tones, I would definitely look into a nice-sounding overdrive or fuzz pedal, and the Fuzzrocious company is a great place to start, as Brian Cook plays some Fuzzrocious pedals from what I recall.

If you have to pervert a bass with effects, the Rick is one of the best choices because of the treble response. :D And you did get an excellent deal on that.

Anything quality ($$$) will sound decent. I would avoid digital pedals, as I've found they suck the life and low end out of your sound. Any cheaper pedals will do the same. 18v power supplies are a good indication of a pedal that is built to enhance tone instead of replace it.
