New here, and new bass

Hey guys and girls, just wanted to say hi. I found this forum while doing some research on my new bass and amp. Bass was my first instrument years ago. I played upright in elementary school, moved to electric in high school, bass was stolen in college, and I just replaced it 5 years later. Got myself a Schecter Riot-5 and an Acoustic B115/B200H. Sounds freakin' sweet IMO

I do have one question... I know there has some debate on here, but the pickups on the Riot are passive and the preamp is active, should I plug into the active or passive input on the amp? A budy said that if I always use the active it could burn out the head over time. Is that true or is he exaggerating?

Thats pretty much BS. The active input has a -10db drop to account for the volume change. It doesn't matter either way which one you put it in, the passive will just be louder.

Welcome to TB, man. Great bass (I have a Riot myself, but mines a 4-string). As for the amp setting, it really doesn't matter as previously mentioned. Personally, I play my Riot on a passive setting through the amp.

Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about. Tons of basses have passive pickups feeding into an active preamp. Plug it in and play it...the signal out of that bass is guaranteed not to hurt anything. You can overdrive an amp with almost any bass, but if you do, it's your fault for cranking the EQ or gain up too high; it has nothing to do with the signal from the bass.

Thanks for the info guys. It sounded strange to me when he said it would fry the head if I ran it into the passive input. He said it isn't designed to handle that much voltage, and I thought "Voltage? What does that have to do with it?" I'll try it in both and see which sounds better. I'm really liking the forum, and my new bass!

The Riot is a great model, esp. the 2009 and 2010 (like yours) models. I haven't played on a 2011 "Riot Deluxe" yet, but it seems to basically be a "budget" version (cheaper pups, more standard bridge, bolt-on neck etc.). Just glad I snagged up mine before they all disappeared, all I'm sayin'

Totally agree. I saw the cheaper one (and didn't tell my wife cuz she would've made me get it ) and it doesn't look nearly as nice as the non-Deluxe. I got to play it at church last week and it sounded great. I even got a compliment from the lady playing piano...
