Double Bass New Lenzners

Last week I installed my new Lenzner guts (plain A and D, I'm using my old G). These strings look very different from my original guts (they are lighter, smoother, but thicker).

I had to put a knot on the D, and noticed that whenever I bend the string, I hear a crack and the bend turns white. Is this normal? It made me think that maybe these had some varnish on them? I soaked about 3 inches in warm water before making the knot, then oiled the strings with almond oil before putting them on.

They're settling now, and they bow really nicely! My bass is louder now, since there is a bit more tension now. We'll see how they do over time.
