That story isn't true. Limbaugh used the song without license and Hynde didn't take legal action because her father Melville Hynde was a Limbaugh fan, until one day Limbaugh opened his mouth a little too wide: he stated in 1997 that he liked playing the song because Hynde was an "environmentalist, animal-rights wacko" and it was a way of taking "a liberal song and [making] fun of them at the same time."
Hynde then threatened legal action but offered a
compromise: he would need to forward all royalties she was due to PETA, an organization Limbaugh despised.
Limbaugh's check to PETA was reported to be around $100,000.
