Hi All!
I decided to use the down time provided by COVID-19 to pursue a lifelong dream...learn to play the Bass Guitar! I've been lurking these forums the past few weeks for tips and ideas on how to get started. TalkBass is an amazing community of experts!

Last week I purchased my first Bass Guitar and Amp, a Hofner HCT 500/1 & Fender Rumble 25 from Sweetwater. I was originally looking to buy a Hofner Ignition but Sweetwater had the HCT Contemporary available at a great sale price (Scratch & Dent).

So I just received the Hofner and can't find a scratch (or dent) anywhere on it!
Plugged it in, tuned it up and it sounds awesome!

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and also say thank you to the TalkBass community for your contributions to these Forums.

Welcome to the deep side. If you want to really learn your way around the bass and lessons are not an option (at least for a while) consider starting with a bass method book. Ed Friedland, a great bass player and teacher, put out a book w/cd thats available for little $$ on Amazon:

It'll get you off on the right foot (or hand), and start you down the road of reading music. That will open so many doors down the road.

I guess I'm in the latter mode as well...Not looking to join a band or play in public.
Just want to eventually be able to play along with my favorite music. (Beatles, Pink Floyd, Air, etc...)
Going to dive into the TalkingBass lessons & learn my way around the fretboard.

At 40, I decided to finally learn to play bass (my only previous, active musical experience being 1 year of sax in 7th grade). After my 1st lesson I was hooked. My teacher told me I should practice standing, so I'd feel comfy when "playing out". I laughed and answered that I never anticipated playing outsde of my livin' room and was perfectly happy with that.......but 2 years later I ended up in a local bar band playing rock covers and had a blast. Learning to play has been one of my life's best decisions. Welcome. There's no universal road map to moving forward.....just have fun

Welcome and congrats on the cool bass. As a fellow newb I recommend BassBuzz on you tube for fun easy to follow lessons. Scott Whitley also has some very good youtube lessons.

I highly recommend a learning app called Yousician

I had a quick look at this and it looks good. As I'm feeling like I'm going backwards at the moment as I can't see my instructor, this interested me. Any idea what it costs? I hate having to sign up for stuff just to find out I don't want to spend that much. Thanks.

Regarding the question about my Yousician recommendation- You can have unlimited playing time & pay by the month $19.99, or by the year $119.00. (In most countries). You can sign up for all instruments (which I do) for $179.00 yearly. Guitar, Bass, Piano, Ukelele, & Vocals. Cheaper than a teacher, & better, if you are the type who feels more comfortable playing alone as a beginner. I have been playing for a long time, and it’s great to be able to practice all those instruments and vocals. Especially when you can’t go out to play with other musicians. Also, usually after the first year, they make you a cheaper offer. I think my subsequent years cost $90.

Welcome! Lots of good info here on Talkbass. Enjoy learning bass. My favorite part about playing bass in a band is laying down the percussive track in the mix. Get in tight with the drum beat and have fun.
