New Mesa/Boogie Fathom Amp

I just tried one today - great amp for the money! I would have to hear it through my Bergie AE410 first - It sounded great though a Mesa cab, great through an Accuvue cab, not so great through an EPI UL410 (YMMV - I never really like the glassy sound of the epi cabs).

Yeah, I would expect it to mate well with good "rock" cabs. Can't wait to try one through my NV610!

I'm thinking of picking one up and pairing it with an Aguilar DB212. That should sound awesome.

I played through a Fathom head and Mesa 12" and 15" cabs at their Hollywood location. I thought it sounded really nice with great big lows if that's what you're after or with more upper midrange if you're more inclined to prefer highs. The controls are easy and intuitive which made it super simple to find a desired tone quickly. The head weighs around 26 pounds and I was told that it can be purchased with a head case which adds roughly 15 pounds. There is unfortunately no Mesa soft case for it. Overall, I would have to categorize this head as Extremely versatile tone wise and super user friendly. Hope that helps!

In my talk with the rep at NAMM, what makes the Fathom different is that the tube is not buffering the input like it normally would. The input is sent straight to the mosfet power section (I believe there are 6 mosfets) and THEN through the tube pre.

That one made my eyebrows wrinkle and utter Huh?

I've had two conversations with Marcus Daniel in customer service, he had to double check the correct answer with the Techs, and received the following explanation of the new Direct-Drive Power Section which makes it a bad Rap from the Rep.

The input signal is Not sent straight to the MosFet power section and then through the tube preamp.

It goes: input to the tube, through the EQ section, and then into the MosFet Power section. The Direct-Drive difference is in the MosFet DRIVER.

The M-Pulse 600 drives the Mosfet Power Section with a Tube. The Fathom 600 uses a MosFet Driver to drive the MosFet Power Section.

In theory quicker response and increased dynamic feel from the amp.

Hope that little tidbit clears up any misconceptions for everyone.

I think Mesa Boogie does a great job with marketing their gear. The ads are always "mouth watering" to me. I always felt they put more into their marketing budget because they don't discount. They have a fixed price, a fixed advertising budget and an established place in the market. Ya got to tip your hat to them, looks like a business run correctly to me.

i just got the amp and i love it. playing threw ampeg 8*10 and precision deluxe fender. its loud easy to use and sounds great. its about 30 pounds

In talking to Marcus at Mesa nobody has weighed one yet

but best guess is similar to the Venture Combo so less than 110 lbs.

but more than likely 100 - 105 lbs. with approximate HWD dimensions of 33 5/8, 22, 19 1/8, again best guess.

Or to be determined when mine arrives

Seriously? They're guessing on weight and dimensions?
It would seem one would need to know those to ship them...much less to inform a curious spec hungry customer base.
