New Mesa/Boogie Fathom Amp

I don't care for the rotating tone knob; I'd prefer to have the eq more like my walkabout.
I understand semi para eq, and like it very much.
A 600 watt walkabout is very intriguing.

It will be interesting to see what this 'non simul-state' design sounds like. Maybe the whole simul-state thing was marketing hooha, but I attributed that second 12ax7 as at least partially responsible for the surprisingly tubey sound of the other heads in the MPulse line.
If that extra tube really does something, then this single tube model might have a tighter more SS tone like the Eden line... who knows.
All the jokes above aside, it would be nice if they at least talked about the design goals (e.g., a simpler MPulse600, a more powerful Walkabout, a more 'modern' sounding hybrid, etc.).
Who knows! I assume Gravity Strings in St. Louis will get one in pretty quickly, so I'll check it out when it comes in.
That preset control is kind of cool, since it's a combination 'somewhat variable' enhance type control PLUS the mirror image which boosts. Since it's footswitchable, you basically have a mid cut AND boost control that can be controlled by a pedal. Pretty cool.. not particularly interesting to me, since I'm not a knob tweeker on the gig, but pretty cool anyway.
It's not art, it's advertising, designed only to inspire you to blow your dough on their product.
The other 2x12 combo (Mpulse venture) from mesa cost $1700 so I can't imagine it costing more than that.Knowing Mesa, 2500.00
In fact, none of their bass amps cost more than that so I'm not sure why everyone keeps saying mesa is overpriced. The v12 is an absolute monster and comes at about 6-700 cheaper than an Aggie DB750 for example.
European prices are another story but I think the US prices are very reasonable for what you get.

BTW-there IS a 600-Watt WalkAbout...It's called the M-Pulse 600- Maybe a tad bigger, but oh, well.

Actually, the Walkabout and 600 are voiced quite differently. I thought I was getting a 600 watt Walkabout when I bought my MPulse. That is not the case.... both sound great, though!
Interesting... I had a WalkAbout very shortly after they were 1st introduced-Loved it; way ahead of it's time, still a remarkable head IMO. Kinda sorry I gave it up, but time marches on....
How are they voiced differently to your ears though?
Same pre-amp, 5 band para vs. 3, added compressor, true,

I've played thru a Venture combo, thought that except for headroom of course, they were about equal in tone...

Even when volume matched, the MPulse is wider down low, and stays cleaner through a larger range of its pre setting. It also will not 'growl' as much as the Walkabout, even with the pre gain cranked up... it's just voiced cleaner, wider, deeper, etc. The BB750 is voiced in the opposite direction... it snarls all the time.. very mid punchy and gritty through most of its pre gain range to my ear.
The Walkabout and 600 are surely in the same family, but the do sound enough different to me to prefer one to the other (it's the 600 all the way for me, but I like a cleaner tone in general).
It will again be interesting to see if the Fathom is even cleaner due to the elimination of teh simulstate design. Who knows!?!
I had a walkabout for a while and now have a Venture M-Pulse with 212's.I can't explain it any better than Kjung.
I was really hoping they would update the Walkabaout, and bring it up to specs. Mute switch, tuner out, speakons, and 500w @4ohms!
Interesting to hear everyone's opinions on the Mesa family of amps. I'm a diehard M2000 and Walkabout user and am very anxious to hear the Fathom.
One thing I was disappointed in was the Scout cab. I have two 4 ohm 1x12 combos - one I bought used off Ebay and another I had Boogie make for me w/ a custom color and grille. The one I bought off Ebay was very new but the speaker blew up on a gig after only 2 weeks. The 2nd one now rattles. It's not an EQ issue or a problem with the head since I use the head with Mesa 2x10, 4x10 and 1x15 cabs w/ no problems. I'm also very comfortable w/ parametric EQs so it's not an operator issue.
Before they both went belly up, I was disappointed with the output. For 300 watts, I was expecting much more headroom but it wasn't there. When I run my Walkabout into an 8ohm 2x10, that drops the wattage to 165 watts and that configuration is waaay louder than the Scout combo at 300 watts. I've also used my Walkabout into an Aggie GS112 and that's still louder than the Scout.
At low volume, the quality of the Scout's tone is great. I've used it in the studio and it sounded great mic'd. It's also good for low volume rehearsals. But if things get a little loud in the rehearsal room, say goodbye to your sound - it just evaporates. Very disappointing. I'm curious to hear anyone else's comments about the Scout....as well as any Fathom reviews.
Also, is $999 for the head or the combo?
