Now that I have decided on a default tuning C0-G4 , I am beginning to record several pieces that will show why this bass exists. One piece was written for piano in 1899 and I am playing it exactly as written and performed on a piano. So where there is "stride" style bass and chords,it is taking me a minute to actually build up the chops to pull that off. "Stride",for those who are unfamiliar,is when the pianist hits a bass note,or octaves with the pinky and thumb on a down beat then jumps up about an octave to hit a chord on the next beat then jumps back to the next bass notes etc. Meanwhile the other hand is playing a syncopated chord melody.
So I want the recordings to have performances that are half way decent. It took me 9 months before I recorded with the 11-string.I was convinced that after playing 9 string for years I could just pick up an 11-string and rip.Wrong.It takes a while to get used to handling the low C# string.
Now that I have an Ab string which I can now tell you is a .003 gauge ,I am having to get used to playing melody notes on this string between the 24-36th frets and the 5 extension notes to the pickup cover.These frets are very close together and require a special approach.
So I've almost had two years with the .195 and 10 months with the .005-.003 and am getting close to feeling comfortable with these two extremes on the same fretboard.
