New Monitors needed!!!!

Upon further reflection, the Studiophiles have gone back, and the Alesis m1 mk2 powered are on the way for a test drive. The Studiophiles seemed to create an artificial harsh spot at the bottom of the highs. It wasn't working for me.

Buying monitors is difficult because of the very reason you mentioned at the end of the above post - and often, since we only know what music sounds like through highly colored sound systems and headphones, it's difficult to tell what "accurate" is.

When I bought my Studiophiles, I took three reference recordings with me: Two Lynne Arriale trio discs, Melody and Inspiration, and a disc of my own stuff. Melody sounded perfect on the Studiophiles, while Inspiration sounded ugly and harsh in the high mids/low highs once I got to a certain volume level. Interestingly, I later spoke to Steve Davis - who mixed and mastered both discs - about this, and he informed me that on Inspiration, the label kept sending back his masters requesting a more "in your face" product, and he kept compromising until they were happy.

All of which is not to say that the Studiophiles are the perfect monitor, but they were accurate enough in this instance to detect something I didn't even know until later. YMMV.

That is exactly it. I need to find a speaker that will reproduce as cleanly as possible, but having the budget I have, I can't get purity. What I'm looking for is something that suits what my ears are familiar with I guess? If the color the speaker add fit within the well known, I can work around it. The Studiophiles were better than the Alesis, and if the next pair doesn't do it I'm at the end of my budget and I'll probably get them again. I'm sick of paying shipping!

Don't know if I mentioned this before, but the pair of monitors I REALLY wanted was the Yamaha MSP 10's - they beat everything I heard, even the Mackies ( I didn't bother listening to anything over $1500 a pair). At the time I was shopping, they were out of my price range, but I recently saw a pair on clearance locally for under $700. DOH!!! Oh well... have you tried these yet?

No, not yet. I haven't seen them anywhere near that price. I think I'm going to try the 20/20bas and the Behringer Truths. The 20/20bas is the most I can afford right now.
