New MTD Kingston Saratoga!

I e-mailed Mike. I hope he considers my advice. I think that a P/J with one of his necks at lower price range would be a great hit. I would love one myself when the finances allow it.

I've always dug PJ's. I wouldn't say that they are 'ideal' but I never have any complaints with them either (as far as pickup configurations go at least).

...I e-mailed Mike as I'm looking for a fretless, just wanted to get his take on the tonal differences between the basswood in the Saratoga and the MTD Z with mahogany+ Burled Maple top. His response:

The basswood will have a warmer smoother bottom end. The mahogany will have more mid range and a bit more focus on the bottom end.

Still not sure, though leaning towards the Z5 tone wise...I could use a jazz bass in my arsenal though, and my disdain for F*nd*r instruments (specifically their necks...) is legendary, so...

I want to try that Saratoga, I always wanted a Jazz bass and an MTD so great combination, but maybe if they had other colors than only those two

Does anyone know if MTD has finalized the color choices on the Kingston Saratoga? The MTD Kingston website states they will be available in tobacco sunburst and transluscent black. The only online vendor I've found is Bass Central and they are offering "pre-order" choices of tobacco or cherry sunburst. Any MTD guru's here? I can't wait to get my hands on one of these! Following the advice I received here, I sent a message to MTD and got a reply back pretty much within the hour... Here is the verdict for those that were interested (Impressive speed in responding BTW)


Hey Brian,

Thanks for the email! I am the Product Specialist for the MTD Kingston line and I can give you the definitive answer you are looking for. When we first planned the CRB and Saratoga basses we chose the Tobacco Sunburst and Cherry Sunburst finishes. The paint samples we were shown had the two finishes looking distinctly different. Unfortunately, when we received the prototypes we discovered that the two finishes looked almost identical. So, we decided to keep the Tobacco Sunburst finish and change the Cherry Sunburst to a Trans Black, which came out beautifully!

Bass Central is going off of information from the first press release that we sent to dealers. I will have a rep contact them and inform them of the error.

So you're getting the trans black? Says they have a gloss finish. Should be interesting.

One thing I like about the Kingston MTd's is they are invariantly lighter weight - helps to use when my back is bad.

Otherwise I am using my Tobias Classic or Basic.

I'm really interested in seeing a CRB trans black with maple board. I love the shape of the body. Are there pictures available anywhere? I've only seen the burst.
