Some do, some don't. I've heard from pedal builders who have said their little pedals get hate email. It took me a little bit to get used to footswitching them without flipping them over, but I can do it now, and I love how they save on board real estate. But I would imagine they'd be pretty easy to rehouse in a bigger enclosure. A lot easier than vice versa, that's for sure!
I get the attraction of mini pedals saving real estate on a board. But like you said, it felt like I was going to flip the mini pedal over when engaging it. I'm sure with more practice and patience I could get used to it, but I couldn't be bothered. I just wound up buying another BOSS TU-3 with the money from selling the mini TC Polytune.
