New neck, but is this Indian Laurel?

Greetings!

I purchase a neck that was sold to me as having a Rosewood fretboard. However, I am aware that many woods are considered Rosewood. I am thinking that this is Indian Laurel, but I’m not sure.

I would appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. Thank you!

If it tastes salty its probably laurel.

I think it’s very light rosewood. The grain pattern looks like rosewood to me, and while laurel can be stained, it often has a grayish cast. IIRC laurel needs to be finished. Is the fretboard unfinished and feel slightly waxy?

One the easiest ways to tell if it is rosewood...

Sand a bit and smell the area, it will smell like roses if it is rosewood.
I'm not kidding.

And that to me looks like perhaps Indian Rosewood?

If I got a fretboard like that I'd hang onto it even if it wasn't the wood I ordered.

This Telecaster HH has an Indian Laurel fingerboard. I think it makes a very nice fingerboard wood. This older picture makes it look redder than it is... it's more reddish-brown naturally. (the guitar is too, for that matter)

FWIW: i bought a neck that was advertised as maple and "rosewood," but it when i got it, i knew it wasn't rosewood. it's pau ferro. and it's a great looking fingerboard. i love playing the ax, and i love the look of the neck/fingerboard, too!

personally I'd prefer a straighter cleaner grain on a fingerboard but it does look like Indian rosewood. it's got that purplish grey cast

Thank you everyone! I do like it, and whether it’s “real” Rosewood or not, I’m not one to return things so I would’ve kept it anyway.

It’s unfinished and is not waxy.

I think the grain and color are what’s throwing me off. I guess I was expecting that usual straight grain with brown/red-ish hue. This one seems grey-ish in person.
