New noise problem when recording

Well,

I finally got my cubase working after the dudes answered my HELP WITH CUBASE THREAD and I apprexciate it very much guys.

Now I have a new problem. When I record everything sounds fine. But when I play it back it has this digsusting white noise fuzz sound thats so loud and irritating to the ears. When I play and record I don't hear it but during playback either through headphones or through my speakers it sounds horrible.

My signal path is a yamaha rbx jm2 with the 3 band eq all flat or else it distorts the input stage into a 12 foot monster cable directly into the presonus inspire 1394. I am wondering if maybe i need a direct box or noise gate or something of the sort like that?

Any help would be appreciated!:help:

I would definitely recommend using either a DI box of some sort, or if your head has an XLR DI out, use that. I have done direct recordings just from my bass into the console/interface before (on a Control24 which has fairly nice preamps) and it sounded great, but I actually haven't tried it with my new setup (Focusrite Pro/26). I have so far been getting the best results using the DI out from my Eden WT300 (I go bass > BMS > Bass DLA > Compulator > amp). I recorded a friends band with the DI out from an SVT and it came out really nice too. The DI box I have is not that great, and until I can afford a Demeter Tube DI I will always use the DI from heads when I can.

Remember to bypass the pres on your interface when you go DI.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I am not clipping anything at all and I have no DI except for the one on my amp but I dont have the right cable for it.

Do I have to have a DI for recording? I don't want to spend the money if I dont have to.

Im sure its not the fact I dont have a DI though because I know other guys who go straight in and don't experience any similar problems at all!

Any other suggestions?:confused:

although a DI box is preferred your problem isnt in your signal chain, its in your playback. It is a problem between your interface and your computer. Try reinstalling drivers, or doing all the settings that your manual reccomends for your computer. It sounds like a software problem.

Just because you only hear it when it's playing back, doesn't mean the problem is with playback (although it could be).

Are you using the boost or limit options on your interface? These options are accessible in the inspire control panel program. If the gain boost is active it could certainly be adding a lot of noise.

It's also important to realize every stage in your signal path where you could be clipping the signal. Check the meters in the inspire control panel to make sure you're not clipping the input when recording, or that you're clipping the output when playing back. Also check the meters in Cubase, you could be clipping the input bus (far left in the mixer), the track you're recording on, or the output during playback.

Also check the latency setting in the inspire control panel. The manual recommends setting it to 10ms or higher if you're having problems. The lower your latency the more CPU and system resources are needed to keep the audio clean.

Even if everything is set 100% correctly, you could still be getting noise just from your bass. When you increase the gain on the signal, EVERYTHING is amplified. This means your "clean" bass sound, and any noise is amplified as well. So it may sound perfectly fine while you're recording it, and when you boost it up to your listening volume all that hiss and noise gets brought out.
