New Nordstrand BigMan

the new callowhill elemental for Derrick Hodge has a setup with two bigmans and three pan controls (one panning between the two pickups and one for each pickup to pan between the two coils...). i´m waiting for more info on this, but at the moment the callowhill facebook page seems "down" and yet there´s nothing on it on the callowhill website...

must give you a ton of tonal options...

I think a BigMan bridge and Big Single neck would be a killer setup, but it would not be hum cancelling with the BigMan in parallel or series mode with both pickups on. I think I might prefer that to not be an option anyway though, at least on a setup like that.

I am planning to shoot some demo footage of the pickup in one of our vM5's very soon, as soon as my video guy can get here in the shop. This bass has our MM2b preamp so it will give some idea how the pickup works in a very original bass. Also want to do a demo of the vM4 that's coming along. That one will have a dual volume setup with our 2 band preamp. Should be killer and will definitely be a more modern and versatile option than the vM5 above.

Very cool that you chimed in here, Carey. I've spoken on the phone with Stew and Adrian and they've both been really helpful sorting out some of my pickup questions (not just about the BigMan). Easier for me to ask than for you to do, but since lot of folks will want to compare this pickup to a traditional MM, would it be possible to shoot the VM5 with each pickup? Same bass/same player/different pup... just a thought. The demo will be appreciated in any case, and there are already plenty of recorded examples of the MM tone.

To clarify your comment above, "I think I might prefer that to not be an option anyway though, at least on a setup like that," you're referring to the hum-canceling, right? Is there any special reason for that, or just because some positions would hum-cancel and some wouldn't (which I guess could be jarring if you're switching between them)?

Crazy -- never thought of a pan between coils of a pickup, but it makes sense.

I meant that I don't see a reason to have all three coils on. I think the neck and bridge coil would be such a good sound that I can't that adding the extra coil would be an improvement. And three coils will never hum cancel.

Sounds killer Carey, but for reference it would be great to hear the same tracks with the same bass and your MM5.2 for comparison. From the quick and dirty sample the biggest difference is on the attack which is likely due to the polepieces (angled pair of smaller ones vs. one large one) but otherwise it sounds very similar, at least to my bass with a MM5.2 and East MM preamp.

With a BigMan bridge and Big Single neck setup I know you'd never want all three coils engaged because they wouldn't be hum cancelling, but could a Big Single neck pickup be used which is hum-cancelling with the bridge position BigMan coil? This would provide an MM alignment with just the two BigMan coils together or a jazz alignment with the BigMan bridge coil and Big Single neck coil together. Either alignment should be hum cancelling, work with the dual volume/2 band preamp, and provide a wider range of tones to work with. Loved the way that vM5 sounded. I just think it would be over the top to have a "J" alignment on tap as well. What do you think?.

Sorry for the photo hack job but this is the setup I'm thinking of. The vol/vol stack allows you to turn both volumes together if you like, which is nice for adjusting volume while keeping the same balance. Active/passive with selectable mid freq should make this a pretty versatile setup. http://nordstrandpickups.com/products/3b-preamp/

We can put these into any of the Music Man style covers we have, which includes the 4 string with ears and the 5 string both with and without ears. We are going to add cover and spacing options to the website as soon as we can.
