I just hapenned to be doing some research into this subject a few weeks ago. Well, I was only interested in what he used in Joy Division. I found every single damn picture of Joy Division playing live that I could find and in 90% of them he was playing what looked like a Rickenbacker or perhaps an Ibanez copy of one. He was definitely playing a Fender Jazz in a few of the pictures.

re. the mention of a yamaha RB1200s, I think this is a mistake-
judging from the pics Midnight posted of a Yamaha BB1200s over in the "favourite Yamaha" thread in Basses- this is the bass he's used with New Order and Monaco (and I think has the electronics that were put in the Eccleshall) -

I bought one of those in the 80s on the strength of having seen him play it - one of my worst mistakes - it was very bland and didn't sound that good. Poor electronics I think? I couldn't get rid of it quick enough!

having active electronics on a single P-style p/up doesn't make much sense to me- on a PJ setup it would be useful.

I could have sworn that on the BB1200s basses that Hook and the other bassist in Monaco were using when they played "what do you want from me" on TFI Friday the pickup had been replaced with a humbucker of some sort.
