New P pickups, need help !

I like the Fender Pure Vintage 63 PU. It has a nice tight deep bottom (as far as P pickups go) but isn't at all muddy. Very smooth thought the mids and has a very nice top- not shrill or harsh. I have them on my 2015 ADE P and I wouldn't change a thing!

After trying out several Precision pickups, my favorites are:
1. Aguilar AG 4P-60
2. EMG GZR
3. Fender Pure Vintage 63

For Active:
EMG PA.

A less expensive option to try an thicken up your tone is to change strings.
GHS Balance Nickels and Pressure Wounds are my go to strings for my P basses.

What makes you think that the original P bass pickup wasn't "colored"? If you look into the Physics of magnetic pickups, regardless of what people might say about their particular choice, there's not really a way to make them uncolored with any kind of decent output level. All magnetic pickups on basses are colored.

I used to have MS2 but have since moved to TH3. If MS2 is anything like TH3, Overloud's default are for recording and not solo play. Meaning by default there is a pretty heavy low pass filter on the final signal. In TH3 the 45degree mic controls it with 0dB being completely off. The default though is -infinity, i.e. no treble. Look for a similar option in MS2 before bothering with hardware.

Well i'm actually with GHS Boomers and i like them, but i'm new to roundwounds, i've been on half-rounds for years so got to check different brands. Next i will try Ernie Ball Power Slinky (55-110), i tune low so i can't take the ones you suggested, thanks anyway !

Thanks ! Looks like the Direct Mix knob brings the brightness back like the 45degree mic at 0db but if it bother me later, i'll move to TH3 too.


Well everyone, i think i figured out what i need ! Going for the more classic tone, i'm gonna take the Dimarzio model P, nice bottom, nice mids, low price and that cool cream color :)
Also thanks sikamikanico, i was going for the pickup swap anyway, but if there still is something wrong, i will give the setup changes a try.

Plenty of good options have been mentioned.
DiMarzio Model P would achieve your more beef and clarity requirement.
Also Lollar (the father of the boutique pickup - he literally wrote the book on the topic) and Arcane from Los Angeles make more vintage oriented pups.
You will most likely have to try three to four pickups to train your ears to analyze pickups and find your match.

^^^This. I have the David Allen CS P1088 in a US P bass and it sounds like this video and his description in the video is spot on. (I have Sadowsky Black Label Flats on that bass.) I've had a few of the vintage-voiced pickups and this is by far my favorite. By far.

Agree. It knocked a Klein Epic 62 pickup off my bass. And a Klein is one of the best split coil pickups out there. Or so I think anyway.

It’s a different vibe. Both are equally good pickups IMO. The Klein is an unapologetic recreation of a Fender 62 right down to the wire and magnet formulation. It’s über-vintage. The D Allens show respect for that same vibe, but they put a little more frequency range on each end and open the overall timbre up just a bit. It lands somewhere between the Klein and an Aguilar AG-4P-60 - which is another fav of mine. Or at least it sounds that way to my ears.

But that’s purely my subjective opinion. All three pickups are really good choices. And you can’t really go wrong with any of them.
