Hi there!
I'm planning to buy passive jazz bass. I play rock, similar to muse, placebo, coldplay. It's a 3-piece band, but with a lot of dirt pedals, so I need bass that really cuts through. I play alot with the pick and I'm looking for that punchy, growling bass sound. My price range is +/- 1000$ in US or 1000 EUR in Europe. If you have any other suggestions you are more than welcome.
Thanks a lot!

I have MIM jazz bass that is my main bass. I had a full level and crown done on the frets (it makes a huge difference). I also put on a hipshot bridge and did a full set up. I love the sound single coil jaxx pickups....but I struggled with hum. I had duncan vintage jazz pickups in them and they just didn't have as much punch as I was looking for. Then I put in an audere preamp which gave them the punch...but brought out too much noise. Then I pulled the preamp and the pickup out and put in duncan quarter pounders. They sound great...but still even with the cavities being fully sheilded...I had too much hum. I just pulled them out this morning and put in a set of Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups...They sound great. They have most of the jazz character...lots of punch and zero hum.

My rrecommendation would be to get a good american standard jazz (or MIM if money is tight) and put in a good set of Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups. With modern amplification for the bass starting at about 200 watts and going up from there.....a little bit of single coil hum becomes a big issue.
