New Phil Lesh Filter Pedal from Osiris

I reached out to the guys at Osiris after chatting with Kevin Scott (bassist for Warren Haynes/Govt Mule/Col Bruce Hampton and much more). Kevin had lots of good things to say about the Philter pedal and got one to demo. The filters in the pedal are reversed engineered from the filters in the Alembic Mission Control bass that Phil used in 1974-1979. Here is the vid. I hope you enjoy.

I am intrigued. I have a Xerograph Deluxe v2 (maybe v3? I can’t keep track…) so I have played around with a static resonant low-pass filter, albeit with no Q control, just cutoff frequency control, but I am having difficulty understanding why this is better than standard shelving and semi-para EQs.

Can someone explain the benefits? I know Alembic basses use onboard EQ like this too, I would like to learn the pros and cons vs “normal” EQs.

This is a decent starting point: https://www.talkbass.com/threads/mu...archival-thread.1592738/page-11#post-28912328

Also, plenty of discussion here, but frankly that thread has become pretty bloated over the years: https://www.talkbass.com/threads/the-passinwind-open-source-preamp.1259692/ . There are links in the first post of my thread to earlier TB threads on variable resonance LPF EQs as well.

Yeah, a hard pass for me too. I would rather go with a JTEX Distiller on board filter pre for $120.
Very different filter. The range is much more limited and the JTEX is a low pass and Osiris gives you band pass, high pass and both with the ability to blend in the unfiltered sound. Alembic has a similar filter, with some extra features, but it’s pricier.

My bass has Alembic Series II filters, which are great, but the Osiris takes it to another level. It’s much punchier. It’s cool to have all three going at once.

I am a big fan of JTEX, though.
