New Pick-ups

What you want starts with an L, and ends with an indy Fralin :D

Seriously, I make that suggestion quite a bit, but with good reason.

For EXACTLY the sound you are describing, get a 5% overwind.

An overwound Fralin would be great, but if you like thick and smooth and don't want to spend so much, get Seymour Duncan's SPB-2 Hot for P-bass. It's an overwound version of SD's vintage voiced pickup, and is exactly what you describe: rolled off highs, thick mids, and cleaner lows relative to a stock Fender pickup. An overwound Fralin would be similar, but will replace the Duncan's smoothness with a little grit/crunch.
