Double Bass New! Pirastro Perpetual Double Bass strings

If anyone reading this thread is interested I have a set of perpetual DG, used for one day, and a brand new spiro s42 E for sale in the classifieds. I’ve been using spiro E and A, I was mistakenly sent (and billed for) 2 Es, so I’ll sell one.

For pizz playing, especially amplified, the spiro E A does blend really well with the perpetual D G. I just can’t give up the arco qualities of the Evah D G.

I’ve been using Spiro Weich (S42) E & A with regular Perpetual D & G for about 2 and a half months now and they blend together perfectly on my bass. More power on the lower notes. Less sustain/“mwah” on the uppers.

And I switched back the this combination a couple weeks ago after some experimenting with Evah Pirazzi Slaps & Weichs for about half a year.

I just put a set with stark G & D, long E/C on a great old German bass. After a few days to settle they are really,really good. They speak very quickly and allow the woody character of the instrument to come through.

Also back! Perpetual E and A with Gamut gut D and G. (I have the stark D and G if I need all steel.)

I wish the E & A had more tension and/or were a little stiffer. On my bass they just don’t have enough oomph. Hence the ketchup (Spirocore) & mustard (Perpetual) combo.

I put a full set of Perpetuals on my old German flatback l, and I love them! I think I need a sound post adjustment to balance the different registers, but I think I needed that before.

I had been planning to put guts on this bass, but I'm going to stick with the Perps for a while.

They are pretty great under the bow on this bass, better then the basses I played in the shop with Perps.

Am I reading this right that the Stark E string is actually less tension than the regular? One of my problems with the regular set was that I felt the E was weak.

.8 kp more tension for the stark.

Whoops. I was looking at the C extension string.

Does anyone know the diameters on the stark E & A? Just curious how they compare to Spiro Weich and Mittel.

As Pirastro describe them as the, "thickest strings in our steel string range", they may well be closer to Spirocore starks. They'll certainly be much bigger than weichs. My main concern is how much they will cost, as the price difference between the mittel and stark D&Gs is big, so that could make the price of the stark E sting in particular eye watering...

My thought also.
The whole set will probably be even more expensive than T-I Peter Infelds.

Did the price go up? I don’t recall them being significantly higher, but it’s been a while since I used them. I’d be interested in a full set. I love the feel of the Perps but the Stark is much better in tone, especially when you’re playing some arco too.

Looks like diameters are .090” and .124”

These Stark are quite a bit thicker than the regular perpetual at:
A- .074
E - .106

I’m not sure I’ve ever played an E string that thick.

That’s making me reconsider just sticking with my mustard & ketchup combo. (Spirocore Weich E & A with regular Perpetual D & G.)
