New PJ Mustang at Summer NAMM

This guy seems to like his! (and he plays a Fodera) Mustang portion starts around the 2:00 mark.

Janek has monster chops so if it was a crap bass I think he would pass on this one.

I played one in Toronto a few months ago and was really impressed with it.

I picked up one this week from GC and took it practice last night. Got some nice compliments on the tone and found the neck really comfy for an extended period. Still need to change the strings, but so far this is the best solid body short-scale I've owned.

After changing the strings to Dunlop Marcus Miller Super Brights, this bass sounds even better. Subtle changes in right hand positions really have noticeable effects on the tone. This sounds just as good as my Lakland 44-14 in terms of funky 16th note grooves.

I hope you like it after the long wait. I ordered from MF in early Dec. last year (I think).
Got a message from them saying I wouldn't get it in time for X-mas.
Then watching the site, the availablity date got pushed to Jan., then late Feb., and it kept
jumping around. I ended up getting it shortly after X-mas though.

Better if you've got another bass to use in the meantime, but still,
it seems like you're having to wait a long time.

Not sure who you're replying to, but if it's me... yeah. I ordered in December knowing they were back ordered, but the initial shipping estimate would have had the bass in my hands last month. I mean, it's not like I've been waiting Darren Huff/SGD pick ups long, but I wish they could give me a firm date, not a constant mantra of 'another week to week-and-a-half' every two weeks. It's not Sweetwater's fault, they're dependent on Fender. Anyhow, it will show up eventually.

I have an American Deluxe Bridge on the way for mine for this reason, will report back once it gets here.

Alright just installed it. It works but some modification is required to get the outer screws to line up, nothing crazy but would definitely recommend getting a luthier to do it..

So it goes. It appears it's a very, very, popular model, which is a good thing. Hopefully QC isn't adversely affected in Fender's efforts to keep up with demand.

Let me know how all your changes have worked out. I've been trying to lock down an OW model and had actually thought about doing all those same upgrades. Thanks.

Would be interested to know what peoples favourite setting is with the pickup selector?
I am tied between P position and Mid position , I like the full tone of the P pickup but I like the high end zing of the middle position

Not a cop-out answer - I like them all equally.

The only hitch is that the P needs a bit of volume boost if you turn the tone all way down.
If you listen to it set that way though, and don't go up and down with the tone knob,
it sounds just fine.

Who's gigged with this bass? If so, any thoughts on it in the band setting?

It just seems like the perfect compact, do it all bass.

I've had a few short scales in my time and liked them. I even had a vintage mustang bass that was great. But I moved to London and cleaned house. Now I only have a '76 Jazz Bass that is great, but it would be much easier for me to carry around a mustang in a gig bag. I use bus, train and cargo bike to get around and the Mustang would work much better.

Someone convince me to hit "check out" on the Dawson's site where I have a Torino red one in my basket.

If it turns out to be not exactly what you're looking for, you can always sell it.
For me though, it's about as close to the 'perfect compact, do it all bass' as I've seen.

Can't comment on the band/gig thing - sorry about that.

Have you ever played the Fender P JR or the MIJ JB62SS? THOSE are basses Fender nailed perfectly. They are just 10% smaller versions of the P and J basses. Same hardware, pickups etc...Its a shame they dont make the P JR anymore and the Jazz is expensive to import. Plenty of us who dont like P+J setups, and to make matters even worse, they make a dumb switch. At least with separate volume knobs its a bit more useable but a switch was the deal breaker. Fender needs to stop messing around and just give us short scale versions of the P and J basses again.
