****New "quickie short scale" build ! ****

Reshaped headstock - I wanted something original (ie - non-Fender) that still suggested "Tele".... anyway, here it is -

Inspired by Sadowsky?

Funny you should mention a hubcap and a resonator bass.... I recently found a Cadillac hubcap and took it home with the intent of making a resonator upright !

:D:D:D:D

That's such a flat out awesome idea. I wanted to build my own homebrewed upright for my folk/bluegrass band and I'm currently on the material hunt. Maybe I'll just keep trying to get that one off of you once you build it. :ninja:

Inspired by Sadowsky?

Actually I just freehand drew it...cut it on the scroll saw... and used the sanding drum...decided to "slightly hook" it as I was sanding. Ihadn't even thought of Sadowsky till you mentioned it...but I can see the resemblance. It's funny, I'm not a Sadowky fan, even though I think they are excellent quality instruments. I'm more of an old school guy, so they really don't enter my thought process.

Funny you should mention hub caps. There is a guy who makes resonator guitars with old hub caps and one of our local stores used to sell them. They sounded great. The story is that Keb Moe wanted one, but his wife thought he had plenty of guitars already. Don't know if that's true, but since when has the truth gotten in the way of good story!? ;)

Anyway, Dark Horse, that's another great build. I'm not sure anything can outdo the Ampeg Tele, though. That was pure genius! :D

Did the small amount of wood you removed from the headstock completely eliminate the neck dive or did it just lessen it?

I played it at last nights gig and didn't notice any dive at all, so apparently it alleviated it. I did remove a pretty decent amount of headstock wood though (even though it doesn't seem like much).... and I use a 3" leather strap, so between those I had no problem. I wish I had a digi scale here so I could weigh this thing...it's just so dang light !

Thanks man !

I'll have to do a Google search and see if I can find pics of those hubcap resonators ...they sound like they'd be cool. This Caddie cap I have is gonna be awesome...I just have to find time and a little $$$ to do the project.

Love the Keb Mo story .... even if it isn't true, it's one that so many people can relate to !

that build came out nice....I always believed that a tele-bodided bass should be a short scale as should les paul's....they obviously balance better and (to me) they look better..the G&L asat basses and Gibson(Epiphone) les paul look a little weird with long necks...nice job !!

Thanks for the kind words .

I've also done long scale Tele Basses, but I enlarged the body and played with the lines until I thought it looked "correct". Once that was done, there weren't any balance issues.

Here's a long scale Tele bass I built -

that long scale looks nice too but, there's something about the shortie that just looks right..I bet the weight difference is substantial between the long and short seeing how you enlarged the body on the long scale ??...also how does the EMG in the p position sound on that short scale ??..I'd imagine it's pretty ballsy..and did you use bass and treble controls or a passive tone control..??

The long scale is still under 9 lbs, I believe, but the shortie is a complete feather weight - it actually weighs LESS than my Dano Longhorns !

The EMG sounds good - its the passive version, and I just wired it up like a P Bass. It's a bit different than a standard P sound, but with the tone rolled back a bit it still gets a nice *thump*.
