New Rig Question

thats a pretty good head, i recently sold my hartke HA5500 (slightly better version of that one) good bang for the buck, but if you can get a GK instead that would be better

As far as being able to add on more in the future, the 210 cab will prove to be perfect. the avatar 210 cab in 8 ohms will allow you to add any other 8 ohm cab to the rig later! and the 210 is also a great cab by itself.

the head will still work if you add the second cab later, but in the future if you want to move some SERIOUS air, you MIGHT find the 300 watts to not have the headroom you need to run 2 cabinets very loudly. This is typical of a starting rig though, the head might end up being something you want to upgrade in the future (maybe something around 500-700 watts depending on your situation) but the avatar 210 cab definitly won't need upgrading, its a great high quality cab and you can get another one if you need more volume later. you might find the 300 watts is plenty for you to run 2 cabs with (it CERTAINLY is enough for 1 cab)

you have been saving for a long time, and you will love the rig when you get it. its easy to worry about having to upgrade in the future, but in reality, I don't know anybody who hasn't gone through several amp rigs. there will always be something bigger, louder, and more appealing. If you really do find yourself in a situation later where you truly need something bigger and you have to consider switching to a more powerful head, just consider it a sign that youre advancing in your musical career. in the mean time, I really think you will be happy with the avatar/gk setup.

I have used avatar in the past, and still use GK right now, and I love both. I strongly consider both of these brands to offer the best bang for the buck in cabs and heads, respectively.

I read about the carpet, and upgrading to the 212, btu the carpet looks very messy and shaggy to me. The orange is awesome, plus the Orange Amp company made me look into how cool guitar gear really was, but I cant afford the real thing. So...

believe it or not in many cases people find the tolex to be less protective and ripped up and torn more easily than the carpet is. I used to be all hung up in the colored tolex at first too, but I actually don't think I would get it if given the choice now. The carpet on mine was sturdy, but it wasnt the shaggy thick kind, it was very tight against the cab and not too frizzy, for lack of a better word. (my GK cab had much messier carpet)

if you are thinking of getting the 212, base your decision more upon which cab you think will SOUND better, and don't worry so much about the looks. at the end of the day it doesnt matter if you get tolex or if you get carpet. and whichever cab you get, if you get it in 8 ohms, you can always add another cabinet later so don't worry too much about it either way for now.

I understand how it feels to be paranoid about getting the right rig, I have gone through this process several times, but at this point I really just don't worry about it anymore. you can search for years for the rig with the "ultimate" tone, but you will never find it. avatar cabs are GREAT, and so are GK heads. nothing lasts forever, you WILL end up buying new gear in the future.

Im also worried about the Avatar. No returns? And, the warranty sounds very iffy. Any help?

I used to have an ampeg combo (BA115HP). It really sounded weak... but these newer ones seem like they could be better.

I really wouldn't worry about the avatar, not only are they great sounding and sturdy, but they are EASILY sold here on talkbass or craigslist because of their good reputation, so even if you did hate it, it could easily be traded or sold. I really don't know ANYBODY who thinks avatar sounds bad though.

If I could go back in time and give myself advice in the past occasions when I was buying amps, I would have told myself a couple of times to just WAIT. I really WANT a new amp, and i want it NOW!!! is the way I felt, because I hated what i was using, but I realize now that I didn't need a new amp so incredibly urgently... I could have waited a couple months and saved up a little more cash until the time came when I really had a reason to have a bigger amp (louder band) then I could have ended up with an even nicer amp which I may have been more happy with and felt more justified having.

I don't know what your exact situation is, but just ask yourself if this is something you need to have soon. If you really don't have the money to get the kind of rig you really want, and you don't need an amp IMMEDIATELY, then don't settle for less than what it is you want, because you will not end up happy with it.

ive not played avatars but ive never seen a bad word bout them. (id have one on word alone if i could get them in the uk)

also dnt settle for something that in a few months you have to change, i say save up for a bit longer and get a middle range head and cab set up.

ive played the gk700rb vloud for the money i think over here they £430, plus ive heard they bullet proof!

OK, I just saw a GK Backline 600 in the TB classifieds, so you might check that out.

I wouldn't worry too much about warranty issues with Avatar. It's a stand-up company. If you have a problem with your cab that you didn't cause (they're not going to fix it for free if you drop it from your roof) they will take care of you.

I was looking through Guitar Center, and saw this. I just got a coupon in the mail for 50 bucks off of a 350 or more purchase.

Should I keep saving and get this head? But I wont be able to get the Avatar for a few more weeks.

OR just stick with the GK?

EDIT: For Jsingles. Im going to be playing smaller gigs, maybe 250-400 people. Nothing huge, and practice with a band. Plus, in my room, basement, etc. I would rather get more, which can be turned down, than get less and have to push it to where it gets fuzz.

Just ordered my cab! All payed for and everything.

Im so excited! Im heading to GC this weekend to get the GK Backline 600. Im so excited! When you save nonstop as 16 year old, 700 bucks, its hard on your social life... But it should be worth it!
