New Rig Suggestions (help needed)

I purchased a Behringer 4x10 combo amp about a year ago. Someone told me that I'd have to move onto a better rig sooner than I'd like, and sure enough they were right.

I've never owned a head/cabinet rig so I guess you could say I'm an amateur and don't know too much about them.

But what I'm interested in are 2 4x10 cabs and a head. I'd like to be able to use one of those cabs for practice, and both for shows. I'm pretty set on getting an ampeg rig, and I was wondering if you guys could provide me links on what would be the best set up for me to purchase, Ampeg or not.

Also, I could use information on what type of head I would need to sufficiently power 2 4x10 cabs.

Thanks.

First of all, powering the cabinets won't be a problem, its giving the head enough power handling with the cabinets that should be the worry. But with two 410's that shouldn't be a problem.

What Genre of music are you primarily playing? Just to narrow the choices.

When it comes to basses, cheap basses can rock just as much as expensive ones, but when it comes to amps, the old saying "Buy cheap, buy twice" comes to mind, especially with Behringer. It pays to spend a little extra and get something of quality. You don't have to spend a fortune, but it always works out better if you spend a little more than you were planning.

I think you're on the right track by going with Ampeg cabs. Ampeg cabs don't get a whole lot of love on Talkbass compared to brands like Epifani and Bergantino, but to my ears, they are still the standard when it comes to rock, and I've never played through an Ampeg cab that sounds bad.

They have two 410 models, the HLF and the HE. The HLF is a bigger, heavier cab than the HE, but it puts out an immense amount of low lows, whereas the HE is a little less bottom-heavy and smaller and lighter. Both sound excellent. I used to prefer the HE because it's a little tighter, but my tastes are changing and I'm digging a cab with more low end these days. Some like to buy one of each.

As for heads, for my money the best value out there today is the Markbass Little Mark II, although my all-time favorite amp is the all-tube SVT head, but the LMII is $600 and the SVT is either $1600 or $2000 depending on which model you get.

Best thing you can do is get to a music store and take some amps for a test drive.

When you say rock/powerpop, i think tube preamp! Something warm, with a cutting mid, and prominant, but not too aggressive low end. Ampeg would be a good choice, but your budget would play the biggest factor in what you can get. What are some of your favorite bass tones in your genre?
