After all these years of playing...I've never tried Roto's of any sort. I should probably try them, but dont like SS or stiff/higher tension strings, this chart may be helpful.

Boy, those Jazz Bass 77 sure are heavy-tension, not just stiff!
(Except for the medium- and short-scale versions, with that wet-noodley E, and for the SM77 40-100 set, which apart for the G is very comparable to the Chrome ECB84 set tensionwise.)

This is nice to see as a bassist who always has these on hand due to having a 35-90 set in production (SIT would be my other choice, but have to go singles for that).

The chart shows what we have felt all along:
1) Certain sets of the monel flats are really tight;
2) The G string in the tapewound set is too tight;
3) Swingbass are all over the map - no consistency.

Always good to have tension information so that people can look at the tensions and realise traditional sets makes no sense =)

Out of curiosity, I just compared the tensions of my 45-60-80-105 Chromes with the Steve Harris 50-75-95-110 set. Average tension for the Chromes is 44, and for the Rotosounds .... 63

The Rotosound 77 50-110 set is pretty high tension indeed! But if you assembled a comparable 45-60-80-105 set from Rotosound, the average tension would be about 49 pounds... higher than the Chromes, but not a huge difference.

Roto Jazz 77, 45-60-80-105:

045 - 57.46 lbs.
060 - 45.94
080 - 46.60
105 - 44.70

That's a pretty tight G compared to the other three. For a better-balanced set, 40G would work out better at 44.53 lbs.

Here's another interesting comparison...

GHS Precision Flats, 45-60-80-105:

G 045 - 41.5 lbs.
D 060 - 46.5
A 080 - 44.9
E 105 - 41.2 (Total 174.1)

57.46 lbs. (Roto) vs. 41.5 lbs. (GHS) for the same gauge (045) - that's a big difference!

Oh, I wasnt thinking it comparable, it's just that the figures for the Steve Harris set told me, quite forcibly, that I can forget about imagining that I like relatively high tension!

That service had been down for a while, but it's back up again now, at a different location on the InterWebs.

I live in Winnipeg and have been buying strings from a couple of US-based online retailers for the last several years. Believe it or not, I can still save money by doing it that way even with the crazy USD/CAD exchange rate.

Every time I need to order singles and custom sets, I email Jason at Fret Nation, [email protected], as he's been very good to work with in that regard. He's also been very flexible with pricing for me as a regular Canadian customer to help offset the international shipping cost.

That’s really good to know. I’m not horribly far from you (Moose Jaw) so shipping and exchange should be similar. Ty!

Now I just need to start online shopping lol but that being said I wanted to know so I could order them from my local Ma & Pa as they need all the business they can with the pandemic and all. I really like them and appreciate having them around so I don’t have to go to Regina for every little thing.
