New Scarf Joint Router Jig Build

So I've been frustrated by the quality of my scarf joint router jig.

It's not square....so that's a problem. I have to shim one side of the neck up in order to get a square joint face.

It's also relatively unfriendly to use, since the router is canted at 15 degrees and always wants to fall toward me, the user.

That sucks, so I am redesigning and rebuilding one that hopefully will be more friendly.

So here's the design:

It is designed to clamp into my workbench's built-in vise, by way of the 6" tongue extending down from the middle of the jig bed.

It will then extend over the end of the workbench where it will drop off at 13 degrees. The neck piece will be clamped down to the angled bed, and the router will scoot over the vertical supports on the parallel bed (parallel to the ground, that is).

This way, the neck/headstock piece will be supported along plenty of length, with plenty of clamping space (on the angled bed, and the router will not be trying to fall and kill me.

Thoughts?
 
I use one of them pretty much the same. I used to use just two pieces of MDF cut to the correct angle then clamp them to either side of the blank (making sure they are level of course). In future I think I'm just going to use my block plane after the bandsaw, as I always ended up tidying up the surfaces after routing with that anyway.
 
A question, How do you make sure to clamp the neck on the jig in a way that the centerline of the jig and of the neck coincide, or are parallel ? assuming the neck width is lesser than the jig width.

Its a good design. Personally I don't find running the router at an angle to be dangerous. I stand on the opposite side of a normal jig compared to you. So i'm not in the path of the router going downhill. Also visibility is better this way. Each to his own :)

It could easily be done by replacing the "lope" on the jig with two semi circles or triangles hinged close to the top of the jig and a secondary screw that you move to adjust the angle. (Either by moving it between preset holes or by using grooves and a bolt with a wing nut)
