I would think a Squier ss jag or SX would be a much better deal than the Danelectro. Im sure it has a good sound, but the nonadjustable bridge seems impractical and the tuners look flimsy compared to the other's Fender type. I have been using Squiers & SX for years and they have never failed me in any way. The ss jag is my favorite of any bass Ive ever laid hands on. I dont do mods either. If I dont like a bass stock, I dont buy it.

I bought the Gretsch when my son started playing and needed the short scale. We both liked it so much, though, that we kept it when he graduated to 34" scale.

It is really fun to play. The action is really fast, and it is really well balanced.

The pickup is located where the 24th fret would be, so it generates a really nice tone there. I don't know the technical reasons, but it seems to make a big difference.

My #1 is a USA Fender Jazz Deluxe, but I still get a big kick out of playing the Gretsch.

As I posted earlier, my vote goes to the Squier Mustang. For me I expected it to be the best of both Basses. I currently own a modded Bronco and a Fender Mustang. My Bronco is the best sounding bass that I own or have owned, but I just don't care for the neck. My Fender Mustang is nice and I like the feel of it (mainly the neck), but it is weak in the sound and tone department. I just can't bring myself to mod it. The new Squier Mustang has a neck listed with the same dimentions as my Fender Mustang, so I think that for me the Squier Mustang modded with my favorite pickup will quickly be my "go to" bass.

Heres a shot of my rockin Bronco.

Nice Bronco! But given your "tone vs. feel" situation with it and the Mustang, I'm surprised you haven't just swapped the necks...

The Fender (or Squier) Mustang is good. The Dano has amazing versatility soundwise, a great neck, super lightweight body (easy on the shoulder) and they're really fun to play. I own a boatload of basses and go back to the Dano over and again.

Thanks. I've thought about it, I just don't want to hack up the Mustang. I may just sell it off.

I did call Sam Ash this evening and got the salesman down to $250 free shipping on a new Squier Mustang.

As others have posted, the SX Ursa makes for a nice bass as well. I have one of them that looks and sounds nice. New they are $140.

I know people love the new short scale Jags, but the two that I've played left me seriously underwhelmed. Fit and finish were nice on both samples, the necks felt good, but the pickups were weak - more than likely a result of the low price point.

I think in an objective, direct comparison of the Gretsch G2202 and the shorty Jaguar - with both basses in dead stock condition - the Junior Jet would come out ahead. Sure, it's $75 more, but that's not quite enough extra cash for the Jag to get a full pickup upgrade.

Again, just my 2 cents, YMMV, IMO, IME, etc., yadda yadda.

Personally I prefer my fender mustang( another good score on talkbass classifieds). Only one complaint. Neck dive. My ibanez sr500m has absolutely no neck dive the mustang has some. Not really bad. But what a sweety. Damn iby spoiled me!
I have a Fender Mustang RI and the neck dive is so slight that I never noticed it until someone mentioned it and I started looking for it. Pretty much no one knows if the Squier Mustang will neck dive, because pretty much no one has one. (The wood used is different, so you can't really compare.)
