Looks very nice but, this will be just like the regular version, a DI to the mixer, isn't it? Just smaller.
I wonder, if this is a pedalboard DI, wouldn't have been nice to have a transformer-juiced 1/4" pedal output to other pedals＞amp? As far as I understand the through output doesn't go through the circuit, right?

Lots of people running the bigger one on their pedalboards so this will be a nicer smaller package for a lot of people.
What's wrong with phantom power? It's already hooked up to an XLR and the RDNI-1 runs the exact same way.
Yeah, it looks like you can't run it in between your head and a cab though. The RDNI-1 will probably still be available probably if you want something like that. It's $100 cheaper though so it's a win if you don't care about that option.
Really curious if they managed to keep the exact same components in the smaller chassis - the dimensions difference seems to be pretty substantial.
Happy with my RNDI for 5 years now - it managed to completely cure my GAS for pedals. I sold everything except my Peterson StroboStomp HD. Only thing I bought and actually kept in the meantime is a ToneX One because it’s cheap, small, can be powered by 9v as well as USB C and also doubles as an emergency audio interface.
If this is as good as the OG RNDI then it’s definitely a sweet piece of gear.

Nothing, but I have had situations where phantom power was not available for whatever reason.

I might pick one of these up just to have. Not that I really NEED another DI, but if this is as good as everyone claims the RNDI is, I could replace a few of my other options.

I have to admit, I have not but heard good things about it and my statement might have been a touch presumptive.
I know DI boxes are not exciting, but I can hear the fundamental a little differently with so many that I have A/Bed against.

I beg to differ, DI boxes are very exciting! Given that my band uses IEMs and plays venues with excellent PAs, I can hear and feel a difference. The RND DIs are excellent, but these are something else. But yeah, you are probably right, most wouldn't notice. I like your profile line!

Not the EXACT same. They've ditched speaker mode on the new M-version, so you can't use it post amp like the original RNDI.
Also, the size difference isn't really THAT big once you remove the chassis "overhang" on each side of the original RNDI, especially on the front. I guess RND decided they didn't need the protection of the overhang when they replaced the toggle switches with a push-button. Time will tell if this was a wise decision or not.
I expect the new one will sound exactly the same. The original RNDI is a very nice DI. Definitely not clean/neutral sounding though. To me it feels like they took the subtle, elegant coloration and "warmth" of classic Neve transformer gear and went a tiny step too far. There are definitely many situations where the RNDI colors the tone a bit too much for my taste. But there are also times when it's absolutely SPOT ON. It wouldn't be my only DI, it's not a good enough allrounder for that IMO, but when it works, it REALLY works.
The first time I tried one I was surprised by the output level, which is extremely low for an active DI. The output level is comparable to a good passive DI, very close to a Radial JDI. This isn't really a problem in most situations, but definitely something to be aware of.
I love the regular DI too, but to me, there are two things would make this so much more pedalboard friendly:
If the input and the thru were the other way around.
You could power it with a pedalboard power supply.

Also noticed that the regular RNDI is now listed at $399 at a bunch of places. So a $200 price difference. You almost have to get one right?

Back on topic, I played through an RNDI for the first time last week. I was VERY impressed with its tone! I could have one in my kit very easily.
It wasn’t like the Khan tube DI I never leave home without, but different in a great way. I really liked it a lot. If I were in the PA business, I’d get half a dozen of them.
As for the smaller version, it sounds very doable. The makers probably took a good look at the original design and figured out a way to keep the original parts in a new design.
