New Solid State HD. Wow!

Here's some CrystalMark scores for the new SSD and my data HD (which is the same as the OEM HD that came in the system: a Seagate Momentus 7200rpm 200gb drive.

Hit next page under the list or hit the links a little further down the page. The first couple of pages are obvious stuff like add more memory. Some good advise like how to back up your registry since some of these tweaks involve modifying the registry. Blah, blah,,once you get past that you should start seeing simple instructions. Where to go and how to change things.

Anyone seen this? 24 SSDs in RAID. For computer illiterate that means in simple words the transfer speed of 24 SSDs.

Anyways in about 2 years SSDs will be a lot cheaper.
I've seen that a bunch of times. It's unrealistic (not to mention THOUSANDS of dollars just for the drives!) in a real-life setting though. I can o/c my gpu like mad if I liquid cooled my laptop. Obviously, it's unrealistic however.

Yeah, me too. When OCZ released the Vertex with the Indilinx controller (the first non-Intel controller to really compete on some level), I think Intel got scared.

Now, we see a lot of up and coming companies pumping these things out. The competition will breed lower prices and a way better product. IMO, it's only a matter of time until the controller is mounted on the mobo, and the drive will simply be storage media.

The other thing which is going to fuel competition is the fact that you can get more storage on a SS drive than a single (or multi) platter drive (of similar sizes). I wonder how much bigger non SS drives are going to get, doubt it will be 'much' bigger in terms of scaling.

The industry insiders (read: competitive mfgr's) have seen the writing on the drive, and it says SSD (other potential non-mechanical storage media is also being developed, as you likely know).

I don't see HDD's hanging around for much longer, maybe some very large scale SAN's where the $$ is impractical, but even that could be gone. Didn't MS drop their interest in Blu-Ray or something? A few key developments in addressing schemes and materials and SSD costs will go the way of all electronics. I mean, have you checked out the prices on LCD TV's, compared to just 12 months ago?

There's a few factors that will dictate that. The technology of the drives have changed a lot recently to try and address this, by cutting down on write cycles. Also, Win 7 is slightly better equipped to deal with a SSD than Vista, which was substantially better equipped than XP (admitted, even though I love XP). Also the type of media used affects drive life, MLC an SLC (multi-level cell and single level cell, respectively) are the two types, and it refers to how many bits of info can be stored on each cell. SLC drives promise longer lives than MLC currently.

Again, it's tough to say because, with any cutting edge *new* technology, there is SO much going on in the SSD world right now. There's changes and improvements almost weekly at this point.
