Oops, yes, mark me down as another n00b who just noticed this forum after having posted several times on other threads. Sorry. 
I'm Paul and though my primary musical focus right now is lead-singing (I'm currently the singer in a blues/classic rock covers/some original material band), I started out playing bass and am in the process of rediscovering myself, so to speak. My first bass was a Marlin Slammer, a catalogue bought P-copy that was so awful, it put me off P-basses for years. I offloaded it to another beginner a couple of years later and bought the first of the four basses I currently own. My main influences are Jean Jaques Burnel, Mark "Bedders" Bedford, Donald "Duck" Dunn, Stu Cook and John Taylor - although my musical tastes are extremely varied, so this list could go on and on. Enough of this though, let's get on with the gear. ;-)
The Washburn Force 40.
Picked up for £350 from a second-hand guitar shop in 1989, it's a bass I still know next to nothing about, history-wise. It's neck-through and active circuit and has quite simply the slimmest neck I've ever played. This was my gigging bass for many years. It's dinged-up, has a nasty buckle rash and a slight twist in the neck but I still love it to bits.
The Peavey Millenium BXP 5-string.
I'd wanted to try a 5-string for ages and this one came up in a sale online (£100) in 2006. The first time I saw it IRL was when our guitarist (whose house it been delivered to) brought it to our next gig. I played it that night. Not well. I've got used to it since then, mind. It's a perfectly decent cheap bass that looks lovely and plays nicely.
The Crafter acoustic.
Another perfectly decent cheap bass (£299), also bought in 2006 but purely for fooling around on at home. It's never gigged or even been plugged in to an amp but it's the most played in my little collection.
The Fender Blacktop Precision.
The latest member of the family, my MIM Blacktop, bought this year (£565). My first bass had put me off P-style basses but when I saw this baby, all shiny and black with double humbuckers, I fell in love. I got to try one out in my local shop and it just fitted me beautifully, played so smooth and sounded bloody awesome, so I saved my money and here it is. It's getting a lot of play, has been to rehearsal (where it was loved also by our bass player, who has a G&L L2000) and gigged once so far. I'm so happy with it.
Amp-wise, my primary is an Ampeg BA-115 combo but I also have an old Laney DP-100 combo, which has been on it's last legs for the last 25 years but still keeps going. I also have a Digitech BP355 multi-effects unit which I'm playing around with until I figure out what sounds I want.
