Double Bass New tail piece

Hi, apologies if similar questions have already been posted. I have a carved bass strung with a garbo gut set. I like the sound and I have been slowly improving it with a lighter tail wire and better end pin. My current tail piece is really solid and heavy looking and I'm looking to change it to open up the sound a bit more. The tone of my bass is dark and full but can be a bit muddy when amplified.

Why don't you weigh it and then try a lighter tailpiece? You could go so far as a Marvin wire TP, too. You have to experiment to know how your bass will respond. You say your bass is dark and full, sounds good to me! What kind of strings do you use? Brighter strings such as spirocore may give you more definition.

After experimenting with dark strings and a light tailpiece for a few years I went with a more standard setup. A 'normal' heavy tailpiece and Spirocores are working well. One reason for doing this was the hassle of buying and changing strings.

Reflecting in this, I don't want to discourage you from trying a lighter tailpiece. It may well brighten your bass and allow a more resonant tone which may be good. There's no way to know without trying it.
