New TC Electronic bass combo - BG250

Hey Davyo

I'm still rockin your old MB212. I lined it with egg crate mattress topper foam and filled about 1/2 of the port with rigid foam. Now it has tight bass and smooth mids for days. The black grill still looks good. Just thought you might want to know that your baby is on good hands and you might want to try the same with your MB210.

Hey Marcus

Great to hear the MB212 is still serving you well and your mods made it even better,,,, and my grill paint job is still holding up,,, very cool.

I must admit I do miss that MB212,, it was a great combo.

Glad my baby is getting the love it deserves.

I guess I wont have to paint the grill black on the BG250,,,but I will remove the badge's :D

Just got the tracking info for my BG250,,, Sweetwater is on it !!!!!!!!

I guess its safe for me to say now that I ordered from Sweetwater since its already on the Fed Ex truck.

I had this fear that if I mentioned Sweetwater before mine shipped there would be mad hysteria ordering of the BG250 and they would get sold out and then my order would get lost and others that ordered after me would get theirs and the one I ordered would then be on back order :D

Would love to get some practice answering questions that might come up. Maybe even a skype session if anyone is interested.

Cool. Good for you.

For questions, just make sure you know the amp and how it works. Also practice a few riffs from as many different musical styles as you can (slap, classic rock, jazz, etc.) and be able to dial them in.

Beyond that, have fun and make sure you get to keep the amp, get lots of free stuff.... And get paid if you are expected to be at the booth for extended periods of time!

I just bought one for my store from the rep to try one out and see about carrying the TC Electronic line (Disclaimer: I run a retail store but am not officially a TC dealer yet).

I gave it a quick run through, and compared it side by side with a GK MB115. Similar specs and price point at $399 US MAP. It is generally the same size as the GK, but a couple inches taller.

It compares vary favorably with the GK. Both can get quite loud, but you still have to remember it is a single 15" speaker.

On the GK my own tastes dictate that I switch the tweeter off (too sizzly), but the TC sounds fine to me with the tweeter on (there's no switch that I noticed to turn it off).

Regarding the specific features of the TC:

  • Voice is nice, it sounds great without a lot of knob tweaking
  • I didn't care for the distortion
  • The tuner works only OK, better on the D and G than the E or B
  • The Toneprint effect is a single knob. Turning it up adds more effect but also seems to change the settings to make it more dramatic.
  • The effect provided is chorus and the settings did not suit my tastes (rate is too fast and depth is too deep).
  • While the Toneprint is a great idea, in this implementation the one knob control seems limiting. I haven't tried downloading effects yet, but the marketing materials claim you can download to your smart phone, then point it at the pickups to download it to the amp. This will be really cool if it works as advertised.

All that said, it seems like a great combo for the price. Well built, looks nice, sounds good.

I'm going to be encouraging people to try it out and get impressions from them as well.

Thanks for the review! Can you go into more detail about overall volume and low end in comparison to the GK MB115?

Just got my BG250 today. I can vouch that it does work as advertised. Personally I would have loved it if provided at least three "slots" to store toneprints and you'd be able to use them in combination, however I rarely use effects except occasional chorus.

FYI - There are a lot better chorus patches in the Toneprint app.

PS - I also wish they'd publish a Toneprint editor.

Volume wise too close to call. GK might be a tad deeper and the TC more mid present (not that the GK is lacking in mids), but pretty much splitting hairs at that point.

One or the other will appeal to people with different tastes.
