New to effects

I've never been a big user of pedals or any effect for that matter, but I've recently been digging the sounds of some effects users. i.e. John Entwistle, Doug Wimbish, bassist from Muse. I'm not sure where to start. I really want that crunchy heavy rock sound that Entwistle has in the 5:15 solo at Royal Albert Hall and I'm digging a lot of sustained screaching notes that Wimbish does. Any suggestions on where to start?

If I were to assemble a mini board, say 3 or 4 pedals, they would be, a tuner, a compressor, and eq and overdrive. But, that leaves off all the cool stuff, like fiters, phasers, delays, octaves, etc. Think hard before jumping in.

mini board, yes. but your selection is boring.

id go with a fuzz, one form of modulation (phaser flange or chorus), maybe a wah and an oc-2.

now there's a beginners mini-board. if you post your budget tons of people will chime in with reccomendations, and theyll for the most part, be good things to look at.

:)

Also filling out your profile is helpful for us. At the moment I'd say work an getting a gig worthy or at least decent rehearsal amp because without one,...you won't even be able to hear FX.

Of course you may already have, or have access to one, but we wouldn't know becuase you haven't taken the time to fill out your gear list. ;)

For fuzz maybe a used bass big muff is a good start, cheap and solid. A used russion muff is also a good option.

Also check Bassfuzz.com

For overdrives the digitech bad monkey is a good cheap option with the EHX bass blogger as a good second.

All IMO

budget wise i'm kind of open except to any 300 dollar boutiques, but I don't mind spending if it's quality. I do have a boss overdrive and chorus, which i'm digging. I'm open to experiment, so whatever suggestions you have I'm open
