New to Me...4001 Day!

Just received this. In terms of condition, I'm good with it. Frets appear level and to have decent amount of life left on them. Truss rod ends aren't boogered . No separation where the fretboard meets the neck up by the headstock (like on soooo many 4001 have)! Electronics work great.

She does require a setup, etc. Will have my buddy Kevin Brubaker remove the truss rods, bend them into proper position, get the relief out of the neck and set her up. There is some tail-lift with the bridge, but I don't think it will affect anything (we shall see).

Anyway, I love the vibe and the bar-grit on her. She was somebody's workhorse (and now she's mine)! Edit... I've forgotten how much I hate reverse tuners...

Love that authentic worn finish on old Rick’s— part of what bummed me out about my old 2014 4003 was knowing the finish would never yellow like that. This one looks spectacular.

The tail-lift is pretty standard and shouldn't be an issue, and the reverse tuners are there to keep you on your toes.

There is some tail-lift with the bridge, but I don't think it will affect anything (we shall see).

It won't, believe me. Here are profile shots of the tailpieces on my old July '73 4001 (FG) and March '73 4001 (MG).

Both sounded great with no discernible lack of anything, tonally.

I have a 77 4001. I LOVE it. I wish it had the mojo yours had. Its beef played. Has some bumps. And bruises but yours is perfect

Beautiful. I'm not a huge fan of how they feel in the hand, but nobody can deny those are some schmexy basses. Plus, I love that color. Like wine. Of the options available, that's def one of my favs.

Nice bass, I had an early 80's split pickup 4003 in Burgandyglo years ago. I got a mapleglo 79 4001 now, funny because I love reverse tuners and wish new basses came with them. What year is it, looks like a late 70's. Mine has very little tail lift but I never worried about it, my 85 4003FL has a 7 screw tailpiece.

Cool color!!! I have a 79 4001 in autumnglo. I dig the wear on mine as well, I just wish it could tell me a few stories of the gigs it’s played before it became mine.

Sweet old bird, maybe my favorite color on old Rics, wish they still had it. The old bridges seem to bend till they fail or bend a little and stay put like yours. That headstock is a lot smaller than current design, amazing how much the proportions have changed over the years. Play it!

P.S. FWIW nearly every Rick I’ve ever seen has that bit of tail lift. Never had a negative effect on the tone, tuning stability, or playability as far as I could tell. Just think of it as a further “proof of authenticity.”
