New Villex Pickups and Passive EQ

I have wanted to try villex for some time. Have read all these threads and pm'd with FRB. I have now finally ordered a set for my jazz that currently has nordstrand bigsplits in it. Fingers crossed it makes me as happy as I think it will - and I can't wait to hear it myself. More later, - and likely some nordstrands listed ;)
 
I have the villex installed on my bass now - jazz with soapbars. Very nice organic and deep sound. I have to re-set all my pedals because these pups really hit em hard - still can't find a good setting on my overdrive pedal. It just goes straight to dirty instead of finding that mild od spot which I prefer. As well, at a friends house I will play at low volumes through a guitar amp, tube twin type. They pound the input section of that thing as well. Great sounding pups though - I am still messing with their height, anyone have suggestions there? - other than close which is what I always read.
 
I just received my new set of Villex NVT pickups, along with the passive EQ "pre-amp" that comes with them. They're in the "Bart P2" shape. I haven't tested them yet, but everything looks great so far. I'll post another update once I get a chance to test.
 
I've received mine last Tuesday, and I installed them on the spot, on a pre-fire Dingwall Voodoo 5str. I've already tried that bass in 4 rehearsals till now and I just LOVE them. Sound clips (and maybe video clips) I will post after next week's gig. I don't regret ordering more of those when they became available. Looking for tubby.twins' informed opinion
 
Last night I gigged with my Dingwall Voodoo loaded with Villex NVT pickups and Passive EQ. Needless to say both the audience, as well as the sound engineer (bass player too) were commenting both on the sound of the band as well as the tone of the bass). I will try to upload some clips later in the day

Just used my newest NVT-equipped 5'er in the studio today. Quiet as a mouse and very versatile. I really hope William can get these into larger-scale production someday; it would be a great day for the bass world.

After several months of waiting, my very own Villex NVT system arrived in the mail, and its packaging was unassuming and rather modest: a single USPS Priority Mail small box, which contained two pickups (wrapped in sheets of thin foam) and a small cardboard box which contained the remainder of the system, which I will henceforth call the "tone module". A sufficient quantity of "packing peanuts" served as a cushion to the contents, filling the rest of the box adequately.

A note on nomenclature: I am deliberately not using the word "pre-amp" to describe the remainder of this system. There is in fact no amplification, since there's no battery or other powered circuit present. I'd also like to avoid calling it an "EQ" since there is really no equalization going on here. Since it is fundamentally different from any other active (powered) pre-amp with equalization or other tone controls, I think "tone module" is probably the best term I could use to describe it. It consists of a number of potentiometers, attached to a clear piece of acrylic; a small circuit board, containing a sealed "black box" and a set of screw terminals for pickup attachment, and a thin layer of epoxy covering just about everything else on its bottom surface; and finally some colored wires to connect said parts together in an appropriate fashion. No output jack was provided, but the two additional wires leaving the tone module were easy to solder to a spare jack of my own.

No instructions were provided with the pickups or the tone module, but as it turned out, none were necessary. I was able to use a multimeter and figure out how the pickups should be connected, and later experimentation led me to figure out how they would behave. The individual potentiometers were not labeled, but it didn't take long to derive their function. Two of the potentiometers were wired differently than the others, and they appeared to be individual volume controls for each of the pickups. The remainder were a mystery until I tried to use them.

Overall, the tone module appeared rather ordinary, with no other hint of its capabilities. The pickups also seemed rather unremarkable at first glance. This appears to be a characteristic feature of William Villex's work. Or perhaps it's better to say that any sort of labeling or on-product advertisement is a "non-feature", by coincidence or by design. I've ordered Villex "classic" pickups several times, and usually the pickup shells are nothing special to look at. The characteristic Villex logo was printed on the top surfaces, and the backs appeared to be completely filled with glossy black epoxy, with no way to see what was inside the shells. In fact, there were no apparent labels or indications (on the pickups or tone module) that they were even part of the NVT system, where in the bass they should be installed, or even any description of what the entire system could do.

Instead of the usual 4-conductor jacketed wire on the Villex "classic" pickups, the NVT pickups only had a 2-conductor unshielded and unjacketed cable, consisting of a pair of wires covered with red and black insulation. This was my first clue that there was a fundamental difference between the NVT and "classic" systems. There were no extra wires required for the midrange control circuit, and it appeared as if that circuitry was moved from the pickups into the tone module instead.

With the initial discovery complete, I began installation. I ran into the first problem when attempting to install the pickups in my bass. The bass is a Warmoth "Gecko" fretless 5-string instrument, with a body made of Mahogany and a laminate top of Indian Rosewood; the neck is made of Indian Rosewood with a fingerboard made of Ebony. The body was routed for two Bartolini "P2" shape pickups, close to the traditional "neck" and "bridge" locations. (Exact measurements can be provided on request.) I ordered the NVT system with pickups of this shape (since I happen to own several basses with pickups of this shape) but when the pickups arrived, I found them to be slightly larger than the sizes of the pickup cavities.

This problem is not unique to Villex: I've used several Nordstrand pickups which had the same oversized dimensions, so it may be a flaw caused by a common shell supplier. I had to use a razor knife to gently shave the sides of the pickup shells, in order to fit them into the pickup routes. I also needed to gently shave the sides of the pickup routes with a scraper, in order to remove a small amount of excess finish on the edges. But after this, it didn't take much work to install the pickups and mount them securely.

The next problem was revealed when I inspected the tone module's connected potentiometers more closely. None of the potentiometer's threaded bushings were long enough to mount properly in my Gecko bass. For whatever reason, the Gecko basses have a fairly thick (1/4") layer of wood between the bottom of the control cavity and the front of the bass. It's considerably thicker than most other basses that I've worked on, and I have always found it more difficult to find suitable potentiometers, rotary switches and toggle switches to fit in these basses. Unfortunately, Villex chose to use (or was limited to) potentiometers with very short bushings, some as short as 3/16". Obviously these would not work, so a full installation would need to wait until I could investigate the potentiometers and obtain appropriate replacements which fit in my Gecko bass.

I found my replacements in several varieties of Bourns "90" series potentiometers. These small units have a sealed blue plastic housing which is small enough to mount easily inside a bass, and come in a variety of resistance ratings in both linear and analog (CW) tapers. I ordered several sizes from Allied Electronics, after measuring the existing Villex potentiometers and finding the closest replacements possible. When they arrived I gently un-soldered the colored wires from the Villex potentiometers, and re-soldered them to the Bourns potentiometers. Due to the tighter spacing of the Bourns potentiometer leads, heat-shrink tubing was used in order to prevent the conductors from touching each other. This was also necessary in order to externally reinforce some of the solder joints, since the colored wires attached to the tone modules were of a fairly thin gauge (maybe 28 AWG stranded) and seemed to be relatively easy to break due to their size and fragility once soldered. This was in sharp contrast to the leads from the pickups, which were quite substantial in size (maybe 20 AWG stranded). (Unfortunately, it was not possible to replace the colored wires on the tone module with thicker or more durable conductors, a subject which I'll explain in more detail later.) I also took the opportunity to change to a more flexible "star" grounding system, rather than a single bare conductor which was soldered to the back of the provided potentiometers, an approach I've never really liked.

With the soldering out of the way, I connected the pickups to the tone module and began testing. Actually, my first attempt was to use the pickups alone, without the tone module in the circuit. This was a mistake on my part, and I discovered that the sound of the NVT pickups by themselves was very thin, anemic and shrill. I was quite surprised by this: how could Villex produce pickups which sounded so weak, instead of the deep, warm and balanced tone that I expected to hear? Then I realized that the NVT pickups really were fundamentally different from any other pickups, and they had been designed to work with the tone module as an integrated system, and that I should be using the tone module with the pickups.

I quickly attached the pickup leads to the screw terminals (which was a very nice feature, by the way) and connected the output jack to the provided leads. When I set all the "tone controls" to what appeared to be their neutral settings, and turned both volume pots up, I was greeted with the sound I expected: great fundamentals, detailed midrange, and incredible top-end detail and clarity. It was like coming home to the Villex "classic" system, with all its strength of character; but there was an additional component to the tone. I played with both pickups together, and then each of the pickups solo'd. In all settings the tone seemed to be a bit more forward, more assertive and more present than the Villex "classic" system, without being "aggressive" in any way. I didn't think it was possible, but I was glad to be proven wrong.

I'd like to echo other people's comments about how "organic" and natural the passive tone controls sound. They impart a warm and smooth boost or cut in their frequency band, and do not at all sound forced or "artificial" like most active bass pre-amps that I've tried.

The bass tone control is probably the most impressive of the three. In its "neutral" position, the tone is balanced, warm and clear. When turned all the way up, the fundamentals and some of the lower midrange are increased and thickened, without feeling boomy or woofy in any way. It really brings a "darkness" without masking any of the detail. When turned all the way down, the fundamentals move aside but still leave enough lower midrange to define the frequency and have an impact. I did find that I preferred having this control in the neutral position or boosted slightly.

The midrange tone control seems to focus on the "thicker" frequencies, not as much in the "burpy" upper midrange. Turning it up increases the overall presence of the bass without making it speak too loudly, or with a "through a tube" feeling that comes with many active EQ pre-amps. Even at full boost, the midrange never seems nasal or honky. When turned all the way down, the tone takes on a pleasant scoop, delicate but never seeming weak. It was very reminiscent of Villex's "classic" midrange cut circuit, but did not seem to affect the treble frequencies at all. The upper midrange frequencies also did not get scooped out, which probably explains why there was not a great loss in clarity in this setting.

The treble tone control operates with exceptional smoothness, and it was surprising how nice it sounded. When fully boosted there was never any hiss or harshness; the bass simply had more of that great clarity and top-end detail. There really is no parallel for this kind of boost, since most of the active pre-amps I've tried have imparted some kind of hiss or noise in the signal when the treble was turned up all the way. When turned down, the treble frequencies went away for the most part, but there was still clarity. This tone control did not impart a resonant peak in the midrange, as most passive treble tone controls do. In this respect I would compare it to an Audere "Z-mode" active pre-amp's tone control, which (until now) was probably the smoothest and most non-resonant treble cut that I've heard so far.

For these three tone controls, I guess the best non-scientific feeling I can express is that they give and take in a natural manner, not imparting a character that wasn't already present in the basic tone of the pickups. There's never a feeling of "too much" of any of these bands, even when the tone controls are fully boosted; likewise, I never felt that any of these tone controls had the ability to boost any particular frequency band unnaturally, to fundamentally alter the response of the pickup and therefore color the sound of the bass. Furthermore, when using multiple controls, they seemed to work cooperatively and cohesively, and not introducing sharp "cliffs" in the perceived frequency response. NVT is, simply put, the most "uncolored" tone control, but it still gives you a vast palette of tonal flexibility. There is no need to refer to the tone controls as "equalization" because in reality there is nothing there to be equalized: the system presents only the tone generated by the bass, shaped by the tone controls to match the needs of the music. I would imagine that a single-pickup NVT system would not feel too limited in its range of tonal flexibility.

When the tone controls were set back to their neutral positions, I spent more time exploring the solo'd tone of each of the pickups. The neck pickup has the same pleasant warmth, deep fundamentals and rich midrange as the Villex NVT classic system. But at no point do the lower frequencies overpower or mask the upper midrange, or darken the character excessively. This neck pickup can cut through a mix! It rivals a Lane Poor "wide aperture" pickup in the same position for overall clarity and detail, and I dare say the Villex even has a stronger yet more natural fundamental response. I'm not the biggest fan of the "typical" neck position for pickups, so when I find a neck pickup whose tone I really enjoy in this position, it's a rare and special thing. This is one of those times.

The bridge pickup is, as you would expect, very rich in the midrange. However, there was no lack of fundamental, and never any doubt about the frequency which underpinned all the beautiful harmonics and overtones which were so neatly transmitted to my amplifier. It was very pleasing to play with a bridge pickup that possesses a strong fundamental and doesn't sound overwound or "too hot". It made many other bridge pickups seem a bit lacking, in one way or another. Even with all the detail and clarity, there was never a sense that the pickup was imparting its own color or tonal signature to the sound in this position, as is common with many other bridge pickups.

In fact I'd go so far as to say that there is no inherent coloration at all, as near as I can tell. The Villex NVT tonal signature is only the tone of the union of wood, strings and frets (if any) in the bass. It faithfully reproduces what the bass speaks, with all nuances and quirks intact. If the bass itself doesn't sound good, then the Villex NVT system won't make it sound any better.

Unfortunately, I discovered several more downsides or weaknesses of the Villex NVT system. These need to be presented in this review. I've mentioned a few others above, but the following merit some special attention.

First, the overall signal level is very low. In order to get a volume level comparable to other pickup systems, I had to switch my amp into "passive" input and crank the master volume up to 50% (it's usually between 10% and 20%) which I almost never need to do, even in a live situation. Most passive pickups seem capable of putting out a stronger signal. Even my set of Lane Poor passive pickups generated a stronger signal by themselves (without a pre-amp) when compared with the signal level of the Villex NVT system. The Villex "classic" system also had a stronger output level. This isn't a showstopper issue, and if your amp is capable of boosting the gain (or if you use an outboard pre-amp or "booster" to do the same) you won't run into any problems with being heard. Still, it does need to be accounted for, and if you switch basses often in a live situation, you'll need to remember to adjust the gain on your amp/pre-amp/booster to avoid blowing out your speakers when you switch away from the bass with Villex NVT pickups.

Second, there appears to be no difference between the construction of the neck and bridge pickups. This isn't bad in itself, but it tends to produce a mismatch between the output levels when each pickup is solo'd, especially if your bass has pickup routes which are spaced somewhat far apart. This also causes a neck-pickup-heavy tone when both pickups are turned to full volume. I would imagine this could be mitigated if the bass had pickup routes which were spaced closer together, or for standard locations, installing a small resistor in series with the neck pickup to tame down its volume by a small degree. I've learned to expect that most bass pickup manufacturers tend to wind the bridge pickups "hotter" (i.e. more windings) in order to balance the output levels between them. (For what it's worth, the Villex "classic" system is the same way.)

Finally, the sealed and proprietary nature of the tone module makes it extraordinarily difficult to diagnose any problems or damage which may occur with prolonged use. The sealed "black box" conceals all the critical circuitry, and is clearly not intended for repair by a technician or skilled musician. Even the multi-colored wires leading to the potentiometers are covered with black epoxy where they attach to the tone module, so they cannot be replaced if they break. Likewise, the circuit board which connects the tone module together is only visible at its edges; no traces or "vias" can be seen due to the thin layer of black epoxy on its face.

This isn't fundamentally any different from an active onboard pre-amp which is sealed with epoxy and not intended for user repair. I've played through several and never had a need to open one up. For that matter, most bass pickups are sealed with epoxy as well, and very few so far have become damaged to the point of becoming unusable; furthermore, I usually haven't felt a burning desire to open up a sealed pickup out of curiosity, to see what makes it unique.

However, due to the relative rarity of the Villex NVT pickup system, it seems counter-intuitive to seal shut the innards of the tone module so tightly so they can only be safely repaired (or replaced) by the sole person who possesses the technical knowledge to do so. We should never expect for a pre-amp or tone control to fail, but in the real world, things occasionally break and need to be fixed. If, at some point in the future, William Villex is unable (or unwilling) to repair or replace a failed NVT pickup or tone module, the poor bassist will be out of luck.

I can understand the need to protect a proprietary recipe or formula for creating a new and unique system, and I know that it can be difficult for inventors with limited resources to effectively defend their patented innovations, and therefore, their livelihood. In some cases, secrecy is an easier defense than a patent and an army of lawyers. However, I also feel that electronic systems of all types should strive to become more perfect "durable goods" which (a) last longer due to good design and superb manufacturing, and (b) can be repaired at some point in the future if they become damaged or inoperable, in order to extend their useful life. I'm less concerned with the desire to tinker a system to find out how it can be modified, or to reverse-engineer a system in order to glean information about its construction which enables its duplication. (These are both nice to have, but let's not digress.)

It's obvious to me that the Villex NVT system satisfies the first criteria: aside from the physical geometry of the potentiometers and the slightly too-large pickup shells, I could find no flaws with the construction of the tone module. These issues are both solvable. It is designed well and manufactured to a high standard, as far as I can tell. The thin and somewhat fragile conductors of the attached wires could be addressed in future revisions of the NVT system as well. I just wish the tone module were also repairable, that's all.

But enough of such matters. The more important aspects prevail: the tone and playability of this system are unsurpassed, by any other active or passive system that I've tried so far.

In summary, the Villex NVT pickup system represents a significant evolutionary step forward in bass pickup technology. It represents a new gold standard for the first stage of converting string motion into amplified or recorded sound. NVT is to this new decade what the original Precision Bass pickup of the 1950s was to that decade, but with so much more flexibility, clarity of tone, and overall warmth. It is perhaps the subtle reinvention of the electric bass, and represents an equally important expansion in possibilities and techniques available to bassists today.

Much has been said and written about the "character" of certain bass pickups, or certain models of bass guitars. We have in our heads an concept about what a Rickenbacker should sound like, what a Fender Precision should sound like, and even what a more modern bass like an Alembic or Zon should sound like. The Villex NVT system doesn't fit neatly into any of these buckets. Its character is simply the pure sound of the bass and its musician.
 
Thank you tubby.twins for the in-depth review of my favorite pickups and I am happy that you are BY FAR more capable to describe tone related facts, than myself. And I completely agree with the term "Tone Module" for was I knew as "Passive EQ".

I will just add my OWN personal experience on couple of points; NOT disagreeing with tubby.twins by any means, just my own personal experience AND opinion.

I am aware of the "anemic" NVT output, to start with; the Vol pot of my Emerald Green Dingwall Prima 5 (the first ever NVT loaded bass ;)) acts as the Tone Module by-pass (Passive EQ, as I was referring to it), but I was told from the start that these pickups NEEDED to be used ONLY with the "Tone Module" (Passive EQ). I had no issues, size-wise, while replacing the Barts on both of my NVT-loaded basses (P2 and BC size), but we are all aware of tolerances in anything measurable and produced.

I agree that the pickups are wound the same (to the best of my knowledge) but it really allows the sonic imprint of the string to be accurately sensed, according to the positioning of the pickup.

I need to compare my Villex Classic outputs to my NVT loaded outputs. IIRC, I not need to boost the gain upwards and with the pots fully open, the output was similar to the Villex "Classic" (again IIRC). I really will go and check all. Having said that, I always use the passive input of my amps. I will check and chime in over the input issue

After almost a month of comparing the "flat" output levels of the NVT pickups (Tone module - Passive Eq engaged but all controls fully counter-clockwise) with the Villex Classic output, I have come to the conclusion that the NVT pickups output (at the above mentioned setting) is SLIGHTLY lower compared with the Villex Classic pickups output. Once the controls of the Tone Module (Passive EQ) start moving clockwise, then the output of the NVT pickups gets considerably higher, esp with the Bass and Mids control

And I would like to stress that judging the anemic output of the NVT pickups, sans Tone Module - Passive EQ (not just fully counter-clockwise, but completely off the signal chain) is like judging the output and tone of active EMG or Bartolini pickups without the battery operating preamp
