New VirtualBass Application

Does it have 5/6 string options?

Very cool, works well for me on Firefox 4. Not sure about the practical uses for it, but it's very cool.

Well, one practical use is (or that's mainly why I made it), that you can listen to a piece of music and use this app to figure out the bass line for it, and get it tabbed as a bonus. The big win is that you can do all this while sitting at your desk "working". You might even look concentrated enough to fool your boss :)

I designed the app so it would be possible to add a user option for choosing between 4,5 or 6 strings, but I'd still have to rewrite the code a bit and record new samples. But until then, 4 strings/20 frets will have to be enough.

I currently have samples down to D, so you might see a drop-D option soon!

I'm pleased to announce that Invalid Link Removed is online!

Improvements include:

- You can now add rests to your tab (requested feature)
- Looped playback (requested feature)
- Playback code rewritten, works better now

Still working on adjustable playback tempo, some problems with the browser not keeping up if it is too fast. And the memory leak seems to be less severe in Chrome than in Firefox.

Hi!

Some new features added, most notably the ability to change tuning. Just click the "G D A E"-icons at the headstock, and choose a new tuning for the string.

When retuned, the tab changes accordingly of course (note that changing the tuning wipes the current tab).

Up next (hopefully) is the 5-string version. If you have a 5-stringer and think that you could record samples with it, let me know and I'll provide more detailed instructions!

Changes:
- 5-string version (thanks to Matti Y-P for the samples!)
- Double buffering for smoother play, more memory-intense though.
- BPM control
- Better session control - your settings are stored for your next visit

The buffering thing is a bit troublesome. Double buffering improves playability (performs better when playing the same note subsequently, and makes higher BPM playback possible), but it uses twice as much memory.

Please report any problems so I can try and fix them!

Best regards,

This is just great. Nice work showing off the power of HTML5 audio tags!

Works fine for me using Chrome and Firefox on Windows and Linux.

People: Use whatever browser you want, but you are being left behind in getting the most out of the internet if you saddle yourself with IE. You will always be in current year minus four. :rollno:

Edited to say, glad you were able to fix it for IE, and what a drag that you had to ;)

Fredde,

Thanks for the great job. I'm sure it took a lot of time, knowledge and talent. Can a left-handed option (flipped image) be easily implemented?

okguy

Thanks for the feedback! I must admit I've never even thought about it. (I guess you lefties are used to hearing that, sorry).

I don't have time to go through the code for the moment, but at least in my head it seems possible. It should be enough to just reverse the loop that creates the frets. I can't make any promises though, I have lots of work for the moment.

I'll see what I can do!

It seems to get a lot better now with IE 9, though. They seem to have decided following standards isn't such a bad idea after all. The older versions will of course be in use for many years still since IE 9 doesn't run on XP...

Works fine on my homebrew laptop (Clevo 570U chassis)

Good to know! But on the other hand, things usually work on Linux ;) (I run Ubuntu on all my computers, both private and work). I don't normally use KDE, so I haven't tried it with Konqueror.
